And all the sympathy I had for Paulo this chapter has evaporated

In his way, we know he loves Daisy, though he doesn't realize how much she cares. He needs freedom, but he also needs to let her into his life. And he keeps saying "imaginary girlfriend," for Mike's actual benefit. Sandy's real. She is not Mike's girlfriend. Paulo is bitter right now about everyone else's love lives, but he did he ever seriously push away a friend?

@Dave I don't know if I agree with your assessment on Paulo calling Sandy an "imaginary girlfriend." Sure, it might be technically accurate, but in this context... it feels more like Paulo's trying to rile up Mike again. I don't think it's a rational decision, likely him subconsciously trying to pivot away from what's actually hurting him. After all, if memory serves, the last time Paulo made fun of Sandy to Mike, Mike snapped at him. Thankfully, it looks like Mike isn't taking the bait, and hopefully after Paulo is done venting Mike can help de-escalate things.

It certainly is a pivot. Paulo's definitely being a jerk. He's also hurting. But he's otherwise matured. There's no way he's just blinded by envy. It's like he's saying without realizing it, "Mike, if I was loved (or worthy of love), I wouldn't waste my affections on someone who doesn't love me!" Mike's imaginary girlfriend is like Paulo's imaginary mother. The differences aren't too far off.

That's a pretty interesting read, and I can definitely see it!

Mike just got owned.

And to think I was giving him the benefit of the doubt last page... Now he's just taking the opportunity to try and do a "this is why you suck speech." Mentioning Sandy was out of nowhere. It's hard for me to really sympathize because I very frequently deal with people finding things to be mad at because they're in a bad mood over something else.

Looking at Mike's expression, really seems like he's internalizing a lot of this and not getting defensive, understanding that Paulo is just lashing out at this point. Really proud of how Mike seems to be taking this so far, really hope I don't just start eating my words in the next couple pages. :,)
