This is going… about as well as expected. Welcome to why reducing an individual down to stereotypes can be harmful, folks! (especially if you consider those individuals friends)

Except she didn’t. The characters she made for her play were never meant to be fully representant of her friends. That’s how they choose to see it. I honestly don’t think they are right to be upset at her. If anything it tells me more that that is the way they view themself

She may not have MEANT to, but she did. It’s not even subtle what Jess’ inspiration for the story and its characters were.

Every time Rachel and Matt show up, I do a backflip. When Matt stands up for himself, I do two backflips.

At the same time having your faults be turned into a caricature by your friend in front of an audience is not healthy either

Except every single one of her friends can easily see where the story she was telling came from, and each and every one of her friends has a direct parallel in the play. Even if Jess didn’t realize herself when writing it, the inspiration was clear, and ignorance does not excuse the harm done by her “work of fiction”. No one is claiming malicious intent, but at the very least it provides a window into how she subconsciously views her friends, and that’s something they have every right to challenge when it’s brought to light in front of the entire school.
