Omg, Sandy's mom makes me sad ;_; she IS controlling!! I knew it from the start. she's fine with her daughter dating as long as it's long distance and unobtrusive in her vicious work schedule.

Apprentice in this case is still most likely a 20-something. Hairdressing is pretty prestigious when you're doing a model's hair, even a small-time one, as far as I know. So yes, we should be concerned about her mother.

Okay, so this confirms that she WAS indeed cheating. I always had assumed it was more of an emotional thing; since Sandy stated that Francis asked her out but she turned him down, but then later she started developing feelings as they hung out more. Also, this really pushes down what Mike is to her. Her mom thinks he's great!!! BUT... only because he's across the country and they never see each other.

This also has some uncomfortable parallels that probably isn't helping Mike's self image. Lucy's mother ALSO kept saying that she was fond of Mike and that he was a good kid, right up until Lucy's attempt on her own life due to the cruel things Mike had said. Now Sandy's mom is saying that he's great because he's a convenient boyfriend for Sandy that keeps her from getting distracted... I don't know, Mike really hasn't been handling those complements all that well as of late, seeing himself as a terrible person due to something akin to imposter syndrome.

Sandy Apologism Sermon Here: I think it's important to remember that Francis doesn't have an explicit, canon age. It's more than just cheating on him with another teen their age. which is heartbreaking of course, but not criminal, just mundane teenage stupidity that's easy to grow and learn from. However, I think it's important to understand that, outside the scope of the comic, she could've been groomed by an adult man for all we know (Or, for all I know anyway, it may have been confirmed in the past). Mike and Sandy, as characters, can develop past their collective wrongdoings cuz they're literally Juniors in High School... Bros, come on. No girl is "for the streets." That's just uncalled for :/ imo

I have this in the back of my mind too, mainly bc I feel like a hairdresser (even one in training) would have to be in their 20s or something, and that's too big a gap. Sandy openly admitting she was cheating as if it were nothing is bad enough, but the implication that she was being manipulated as well just makes the whole thing worse...

This seriously makes my skin crawl i dont think sandy has any real feelings for mike she basically just admitted she only picked mike because he was the safe option…thats gotta sting 😞

Boy Mikey Boy, that isn't worrying at all. Was so tearful with that one conversation and still even if so "hard" for sandy that feels rather simple to make that choice so fast. Just wait until it's another model that Mother Dearest thinks is less a distraction and more an opportunity with a lovely couple option. But we and Sandy know he is quite wrapped and knotted around her finger anyway. As much as he may ever beat himself up over any of this, he will always come back like an addict. "Please, Sandy, I want more word."

Sandy's mom is isolating her daughter in the name of this career she pushed Sandy into... I see someone struggling to connect to anyone meaningfully out of the eyes of their parent. She suddenly has time for Mike because she is clinging to what she can hide.

It's too easy to ascribe adult motivations to teenage characters, but at this point Sandy is exhibiting massively bad behavior, teenager or not. I don't think she dumped Francis at all. I think she's lying not out of malice, but rather because she needs an anchor to her "old life". It's not on Mike to be that anchor. Honestly, Mike's heart has been yanked around by so many people, it's no wonder he can't see this as the enormous red flag that it is.

The cracks are showing. Literally. I don't think he's blind, and I don't think he's ever going to fully trust her again, regardless of whether or not she's telling the truth.
