You know. That is a good question. I understand most of them have known each other since elementary school. Yet their friendship has always been a bit one-sided, and Sue might be starting to realize that.
I mean, maybe I’m misremembering a bit since it’s been years, but I cannot recall a single time Lucy has had a positive one-on-one interaction with anyone from her former friend group. That’s unless Mike was involved in some way, shape, or form.
Which is kinda funny in a sad way, since Mike never needed a reason to hang out with Sue. He genuinely enjoyed her company, but she didn’t hesitate to exchange him for Lucy. And I get it, because by that point Mike had changed and became harder to be around. The problem is, she did this to put an idealized version of someone who doesn’t exist on a pedestal they never wanted to be on.

I’d say there’s a couple of points where Mike’s involvement is pretty minor and Lucy is legit nice to Sue (Lucy seems to have genuinely liked Sue’s play, for example). but not enough to say they’d get along without him to have brought them together in the first place.
the more you dig into it, the more it really seems like the entire group only exists because of Mike. Paulo/Daisy/David become a group without him, presumably Sue/Amaya do as well, but those two groups don’t come together; while Sue gets on well with Daisy and Amaya gets on well with everybody, I don’t see that being enough for Sue to put up with the two guys. meanwhile Lucy in elementary school was so misanthropic she needed Mike to introduce her to others, she’s not going to reach out to anyone of her own volition.
hell, let’s zoom out a layer further. James is friends with Paulo but they didn’t even realise they went to the same school without Mike catching James’ attention. no Mike and Lucy means no Confrontation, which means Augustus is never involved. the lack of needing to save Daisy from Augustus and Abbey not having anyone else in Daisy’s friend group he really tolerates means he probably doesn’t last as long as he did, if at all. Tess… idk, actually, she seemed to gravitate towards Paulo and Daisy and without Augustus I don’t think the temporary falling out between Daisy and the rest of the group happens, but then that also has a bunch of implications on how Daisy gets along with the other cheerleaders and it starts getting a bit too complicated to properly hash out.
it really is Mike’s friend group, and everyone might soon be seeing why that is. (funnily enough, you might be thinking this might be the only thing Mike was right about in December, but no! even back then his hang ups about people losing romantic interest in him were manifesting and he legit believed that the rest of the group only liked him because of Lucy, which made the plan to abandon her extremely weird and self-contradictory with the rest of the speech. he was really a bit of a confused mess, there.)
