Good for her :-)

Good for her would be to tell her mom to her face that she has to talk to Mike herself. The petty and spiteful approach is literally good for no one.

What Haley is doing helps no one.
Not herself, or Mike.

Honestly i can feel for her. She is being parentified and emotionally neglected by her mother, nothing hurts worse than someone you love making you feel like their life wouldnt change if you disappeared.

For real!! She is a teenager and has some big feelings, just like mike. I cant help but feel bad for her because before this it was her mom asking her to take care of chris. She probably feels forgotten about or not as important. I dont say this to try to downplay what mike is going through but she also doesn’t deserve to have her feelings minimized. It shouldnt be a contest of who has it worse and lets be honest if mike has an ED her giving him that lunch will do nothing.

Yes agreed. Often times when one parent is not being the spouse that the other parent needs, sometimes they turn to their children for support which is not appropriate. Haley is a child, with her own life. She shouldn’t be expected to carry the emotional weight of her mom and mikes feelings on top of being responsible for Chris.
Zambies
Comment ID #219816
No one’s asked her to carry anyone’s emotional weight. She was asked to deliver a lunch, that’s all. Mike’s never treated her badly to deserve this hatred. And yeah, if he has an ED he wouldn’t eat that lunch anyway, but that’s not what it’s about. It’d be nice for him to know anyone cares about him, especially his own family, but apparently that’s too much to ask
Addystar
Comment ID #219817
@addystar lmao just because no one asked her directly and outwardly word for word to carry emotional weight doesn’t mean their words and actions don’t imply that’s what they are doing. 🤨 please go over the comic again because if you’re pulling “hatred” from these interactions then I fear you are wrong.

Okay I can see her being neglected in all of this but to call your mom a b*tch is a bit extreme.

I understand being upset with her mom but why does she have to take it out on Mike’s lunch? Is she not even going to check up on him? Wonder why he’s not taking lunch?
I think what gets me, is she knows that Mike even had an argument with Sandy, and heard him yell and destroy his room. Regardless of whatever is going on with him, she doesn’t seem keen on finding out.

When a kid is emotionally neglected/their needs are put actively below their siblings‘, resentment tends to develop towards the siblings even if it isnt their fault. Especially because in this case, Haley has been handed a lot of emotional burden over a long period of time and is still expected (by her mum) to be Chill And Fine™, however when Mike is unhappy their mum, firstly, actively notices and not only tries to be caring and sympathetic, but ALSO expects Haley to be a deliverer of said sympathy
Ofc not saying that her being petty/spiteful is good or justified, but it’s understandable that she would have some mad jealousy towards her brothers because it’s been taught to her that their feelings matter more for whatever reason, and that’s absolutely the fault of their mum and not Haley or Mike’s

Oh no I’m fully aware of that. I understand she’s being spiteful/taking out her jealously in Mike, and it’s unwarranted. To be fair to her, how she sees Mike is the way her mom see’s him, as her “precious brother”. And yeah, she’s absolutely a teenager and the theme of this comic is teenagers can be selfish and stupid. But even still, it’s one of those situations where as a depressed teen with a MDD myself no one ever paid attention to me because they always saw the “good kid”. Mike is in that situation, and it’s the kind of thing that could lead to him hurting himself where people will say “where were the warning signs” but the warning signs were obvious. It’s because no one checked up on him that it’s getting out of control. She’s still his sibling and if his mom is that worried about him. I hope she puts aside her differences to check up on him.

Its crazy thinking about the parallels and differences between Haley and Jordan. Both had that underlying sibling banter when they were introduced, but when Lucy was going thru it Jordan cared and wanted to be there for her more, and here Haley is in somewhat a similar position, but ignorant to how bad it actually really is, as well as jaded by feeling like she’s being treated like the “lesser” sibling in the family. I’m curious to see what Vero is going to do with her this chapter, but the development we already have is interesting to see play out.

Knew it. Also Ellen not making Haley a bag, but expecting her to deliver it to Mike? Ma’am I get that you are worried about your son but seriously?
Fiver
Comment ID #219833
I mean that’s an assumption, just cause we don’t see Haley getting a bag doesn’t mean she didn’t get lunch offscreen. If she didn’t get a lunchbag herself i feel she would be eating Mike’s sandwich. Not giving it away

From what Haley said on a previous page, she made it sound like the both of them are typically expected to buy their own lunches. I guess that’s an assumption too, but so is saying that she’d eat the bag lunch herself if she wasn’t given one. The narrative is pointing to this being special treatment that she’s resentful of.

I feel like people are being a bit hasty defendings Haley’s behaviour here.
The Mike household has been kept vague on purpose and i think people are treating the blanks they fill in as truth
I see a lot of comments thinking Haley has to be a parent for Chris and is getting too much responsibility.
But from what i remember we have seen Mike also had to babysit Chris and the one time we’ve seen Haley was suppose to babysit she shoved that responsibility to Mike so she could go party
I might not be remembering all snippets of what Halleys deal is but from what i remember it’s just as likely that she’s a frustrated child being forced to take on too much or she’s a jealous teen throwing a tantrum the moment any responsibility is expected of her at all or possibly somewhere in between

In the phone call we saw between Ellen and husband Ellen was complaining about how much they were asking Haley to watch Chris

Comment ID #219837
Thanks for reminding me of it. Went back to reread that part and it does explain a lot of Haley’s frustrations. Also shows i was just wrong about Mike also having to babysit, he wants to but he aces his exams so he has to focus on that while Haley picks up the burden

Augustus and Paulo’s ex (forgot her name) are here. Maybe they’ll be able to have an emotionally honest and thought provoking conversation with Haley.

I don’t think Abbey’s work to stop the “all moms are queens” instinct is strong enough for this one

I wonder if this will lead to an argument between Haley and Abbey. Her unflattering comment of her mum will most likely rub him off the wrong way (since he’s lost his birth mum, he could potentially hit her with the “be grateful that you still have a mum” remark) AND he knows that this situation with the lunch bag is tied to Mike, his close friend, so this could potentially set him off. An argument between Haley and Abbey could be really interesting since we’ve never properly seen them interact.

Being the first child can be hard when your parental figure(s) basically chock you up as a loss. I totally get her seething anger at how her mom treats her.
It is still sad to see her come up short as a sister.

This won’t make her problems go away, or make her feel better in the long run.

Don’t worry, she doesn’t mean that. It’s just her emotions talking. She still has much to learn.
Just enjoy the freedoms of youth while you still got it because when you turn 18 and $chool is now optional…reality hit$ you really hard like a ton of brick$$,$$$,$$$ and you begin to miss the joys of youth in many ways.

I’m sorry but there is no possible justification for Haley to act this way. Her own brother is visibly malnourished and exhausted and she just doesn’t give a shit. I don’t care if she thinks he’s the golden boy or whatever, she’s being extremely selfish and petty.. Someone needs to tell her it’s pretty normal for a mother to focus more attention on the child who’s currently struggling.

At the end of the day Haley is a teenage girl 🤷♀️ she’s not going to express her emotions in a “healthy” way 100% of the time. She’s just a kid
