Unrelated note and major plot point, but is Lucy supposed to be wrong about Mike always being a manipulator who hurts others in the same way Mike is supposed to be wrong about Lucy in December? Not trying to be disrespectful.

I think the idea is that both situations are complicated. Mike may be right about some things but he still makes mistakes in his handling of the situation. The same can probably be said about Lucy.

Yeah, I just have no idea what’s going on in the narrative. Then again, asking such an important plot point on here won’t get a definitive answer without taking the tension out of the plot.

My take on it is the parallel is each of them getting called out on ways they didn’t realize they hurt other people. Lucy didn’t realize her rough-housing and acerbic attitude is received as actual bullying by others. Mike didn’t realize he’s been hurting his friends by stringing them along to help patch up his loneliness from being a long distance relationship. Neither of them had bad intentions, but intent doesn’t stop people from getting hurt.

I mean, he clearly established his boundaries as friends, told James he had a GF, wanted Paulo to only be a friend in new years, and other examples.

I don’t think that’s something that’s going to be answered cause what was wrong is very much open to interpertation.
Personally i think Mike was 100% right about Lucy in December and how pretty much no one really cared about Lucy’s abuse towards him has been a big painpoint for me cause it’s very reminicent of how real male victims of abuse are often treated.
But many people see it differently and they aren’t wrong that Mike hasn’t exactly been a saint either

I feel like the story is more headed towards a “you have to let go of your grudges from the past or they will comsume you”
Abbey and Paulo had a real rough history to say the least and they were able to see eye to eye. Seems this chapter is about resolving Sue’s grudges towards Paulo so it does seem to be a theme

I just hope Mike isn’t treated as a villain by the table after his anorexia and depression catches up to him. He’s not perfect, but he didn’t lead people on. And agreed, He was pretty much right on how nobody cared about Lucy abusing him, it definitely affected his self-esteem.

@Mus regarding Mike establishing boundaries, he says it but doesn’t always demonstrate it with his behavior. He rejects Lucy because he has a girlfriend, but then gets angry and jealous over her showing attention to Paulo or Augustus. He turns down James, but then gets upset that James’ interest shifts to David. Doesn’t want to date Daisy, but will kiss Daisy without permission in the library. He contradicts himself a lot with what he says he wants vs what he actually wants.

Lucy beat him for years and then promptly rebounded with Paulo which affirmed his belief that he was only a plaything to her, and her behavior with Augustus reinforced that belief due to her preferential treatment of him. James lovebombed and then discarded Mike for David, insulting him shortly after the date he tricked Mike on. And wasn’t the Daisy thing her offering to get back on Sandy or am I misremembering it?

I like for how expressive David typically is, he seems to rarely changes expressions during tense/uncomfortable moments like this

Paulo going to show his growth by being the bigger person and giving sue one of the tickets im praying

Volumes 1-4 Paulo would absolutely rub salt in the wound, so I’m praying that current day Paulo will actually take his character development to heart and be mature about it. If he starts acting smug, then he’s essentially proving she was right to have ignorant mindset about him.

David, sensing the upcoming opportunity as the tribunal favor shifts to Paulo, manifests a tie for his movie date with Paulo. Gotta class it up a bit for his best boy

Ya this is going to be very humbling for Sue most likely. Either that or Paulo is going to act like a jerk to make her “right” and then forfeit the tickets. But that would be so… Tropey? Like that’s the kind of thing writers do to extend the plot and add tension, but it’s also the stupid kind of shit a teenager might think to do. >_o

Now I feel sorry for Sue. Maybe Paulo will comfort her, or put on a stupid act that makes her feel superior.

Paulo extends the olive branch and Sue…might not take it. I hope she has been humbled enough at this point to show some growth.

ok, I agree that the spread of challenges have not been particularly “well-rounded”, but if you were to throw in an intelligence test and make the physical stuff only count as a single round… Sue would still be losing! all that would be happening is reassurance of something everyone already knows and, worse still, would just leave us back where we started when Sue wins that single round and inevitably calls Paulo an idiot over it. just gotta let it go, seriously

They’re not wrong but I also feel for Sue so much. Paulo has always put her down, often dismissing her as an uptight nerd and implying the things she cares about don’t matter. And finally she had the opportunity to use those kinds of knowledge he often dismissed to stick it to a guy she still clearly sees as a bully who looks down on her for having them. It must hurt to be shown up by him in those very things. She’s still in their crutches too, her last humiliation trying to prove herself physically worthy of respect wasn’t too long ago. And now she feels she’s lost in the mental arena too, and to the very guy who’s mocked her for being good at that. She is always trying so hard to prove herself and falling painfully short. I think in this, her and Paulo have more in common than they think, and I wish they could find a way to bond and empathize over that honestly. These two could be good for each other as friends.

I love the character growth shown here. In the past Paulo would have gloated over every single victory but now he instead calmly explained how he knew some answers

I know that “to show growth” Paulo should offer her the tickets. Really drive home that hes changed over the years and is pretty much just matching Sue’s energy when they interact. But I also don’t want him to have to take the high road. Let him ask if she actually wants the tickets or if she just doesnt want him to have them. Let him suggest trivia about the book!Hell, let him do a word for word reenactment of the Museum trip!! Anything other than him just giving them to her.

Probably a weird thing to think about in this moment, but in the parable of two parents doing a tug of war on a child to determine who loves the child more, it really is coming across how Sue would win the tug of war… because Paulo would be the one to let go once he realized it was hurting the child. Sue’s insecurities have had a vice grip on her for so long, and has yet to really experience the deeply empathetic side of Paulo. Seems she’s about to get firsthand experience with that side.

I hope Paulo takes the high road, he doesn’t need to be super nice about it or anything, but it would show people they can’t judge him the same way they used to.
