I kinda wish I knew who told Lucy’s mom exactly what happened between her and Mike. Did Lucy open up about it herself while hospitalized, did she keep it vague, or did she actually tell her family everything? Does Lucy’s mom think Mike was hurting her emotionally for no reason or does she know the full story of Lucy physically hurting Mike prior ? Or is Lucy’s mom still mostly in the dark and just trying to protect her daughter from the one solid thing she gleaned out of Lucy’s avoidant confessions.
Either way, Lucy wont be living this down with her mom for a while.

nobody’s ever told her anything. Lucy constantly refuses to talk and Augustus has been defying requests to let her actually help her
basically all Carol knows is that Lucy had been hitting Mike (she didn’t approve), they probably had a fight (Jordan was guessing, but also that was before December), then the attempt happened and Lucy hates Mike now. she can’t even tell that the fight was the cause, because when pressed Lucy blew up at her over the plan to have her move away

She’s Lucy’s Mom, her job isn’t to know all the details and be a fair impartial judge on who was right or wrong - her job is to be on Lucy’s side and support/protect her. She doesn’t need the whole story to know that Lucy and Mike are NOT on good terms anymore, and to be glad that Lucy’s spending time away from him and with other friends instead.

Probably both. And as for her feelings about Mike, also both. I think she’s forcing herself to focus on her anger every time she feels concerned, because she’s worried that if she lets herself feel for Mike, she’ll reach out to him and just get hurt again.

am i the only one reading ambiguity and conflict in lucy’s mom’s words here? i’ve had this exact conversation with my loving but nosy mom— she wants to make sure lucy’s alright, but is feeling forlorn at the fact mike CAN’T be a part of her life anymore, for her own health. even if the “good” is an angry one, it’s out of protection for her daughter, who almost took her own life. i don’t read that as ‘brutal’ or cold, but more like resigned and upset.

You can’t blame Carol for being angry with Mike, regardless of how much of the whole picture she knows. She will always pick Lucy over Mike, Lucy is her baby, and as far as she is concerned Mike had a big part in Lucy hurting herself.
