I don’t completely agree with this read, but I agree with the sentiment. Lucy is being nasty for no reason. Like get a hobby or make new friends, damb

What are you talking about? She’s clearly upset about both seeing Mike looking dead inside, and about putting herself back at the table too soon. But she’s doing it for Augustus, her friend, because she mistakenly thinks she needs to do this for him. What part of that is “wanting to be the center of the universe”?

Huh?? She’s obviously struggling with her PTSD on this page and feeling like she needs to sit next to active triggers in order for Augustus to hang out with his friends… how is that her “hating not being the center of the universe”?

you think maybe rewarding him for something you told him not to do was a bad idea?

Ok so she’s feeling shitty and wants her usual support structure she’s built, only she already pushed him to spend time with his friends during lunch. Will she rebuild her old support? Or will she do what she used to do and avoid actually telling them anything and hoping they will pick up she feels like shit

Farewell Mike, I know you held on as long as you could.
Though your story may be over and your role no longer needed, I hope you found peace as your eyes shut for the last time.
Though your family will miss you, I hope they will be able to cope with their loss.
Your passing was unintentional, and I hope you can realize that you will be missed by your old friends.

Color me surprised that Lucy gets upset over something she encouraged someone to do.

And Augustus said Mike wants to be the center of attention even to those who moved on… yeah right… these kids keep going back and forth from being the victim and abuser every chapter.

You know i always found the Lucy/Sue dynamic to be very strange.
Sue often bends over backwards for Lucy trying to be there for her or stand up for her but Lucy seems to barely acknowledge her existence unless she needs something
I don’t know if i’m trying to read into it too much and their friendship happens more offpage but it has always felt very one sided to me

It sucks that Sue is lumped in with Mike, Paulo and Daisy as part of the “friends that have emotionally hurt me and I still have unresolved tension towards them” group because Sue has been nothing but extremely supportive towards Lucy throughout the entire webcomic run.

Ehhhh except arguably keeping Mike and lucy cast as the leads in the play instead of seeing something was up and switching it out, even if it wouldn’t have come out perfectly in the end. I know Lucy was masking a LOT but still there was some unrest there

Didn’t she cast them specifically cause she hoped it would have fixed their issues or am i misremembering that?

I think a big part of it is because Lucy’s PTSD revolves around the Alejandro attack/SA that happened in front of 3 friends: Sue, Daisy, and Paulo. They show up in her PTSD flashbacks and that’s why she’s still a bit weird with Sue.

Am I crazy here? This doesn’t seem like she’s pining for Augustus’s attention to me. It looks more like she’s panicking about picking up her routine from before she left, sees Augustus with real friends, and reminds herself he would leave them to care for her if she left the lunchroom. She wants him to experience a normal life for his last year, even if that means she’ll be uncomfortable for a little while.

Right, but the fact she feels like she’s martyring herself by, uh, hanging out with her friends? Seems like…I don’t know what I feel about it, but it doesn’t feel great. It’s weird and annoying at the very least

She’s making a mistake but she’s trying to do the right thing. Lucy has said more than once that she really “owes” Augustus. She desperately wants to repay him for saving her life, even though he doesn’t see it as a debt at all.
So here she’s making an impulsive “sacrifice” for him to have more friends. It’s not healthy or a good idea, but she’s doing it because she values his social life over her own discomfort at being back at the table.

How is she martyring herself here? She still likes her friends. She’s been chill with several of them in one on one interactions. She’s also still allowed to be nervous about being with the full group again on her own. If anything, she’s taking the steps to face her anxieties head on. Dealing with any kind of trauma is a process.

@Zai she’s martyring herself because she literally does not need to sit with them if it’s such a bother to her. There are other things she could do during lunch. She could tell Augustus to stop babysitting her and she can chill in the library or something, I don’t know. To sit there and mutter passive aggressively isn’t really…great.

NGL I’m pretty surprised by these harsh and uncharitable interpretations!
It looks to me like Lucy is having a lot of second thoughts about this - seeing Mike looking so empty and unkempt, having to go back to the table with the people she’s been having recent PTSD flashbacks about - but she doesn’t see herself or her comfort as important.
So she’s making a completely unnecessary “sacrifice” for Augustus’s sake - in her mind, she has to repay him for saving her life by making sure he has friends and a good senior year. In reality she never needed to do this, but she’s also a mentally ill teenager, so I can understand why this is the conclusion she’s come to.

Ahhh, and here her true feelings come out… she still doesn’t want to be at the table with the people who trigger her PTSD & who she still holds resentment for, but will do so in order for Augustus to be around his friends instead of “babysitting” her.

It’s so cruel how Mike and Lucy are suffering for the same reason; sacrificing their own happiness and well-being for the sake of others. But Mike’s isolating when he’d rather be with friends while Lucy’s with people when she’d rather be alone/with Augustus.

I mention it all the time but the duality of Mike and Lucy — how they’re so similar yet conflicted — how they’re two ends of a connected line segment that struggles to meet in the middle — is super captivating to me.
