This comic features a very.. vulgar Paulo. I think Volume Three is when that trait really started for him. It’s kinda weird to see it develop!

Paulo’s swearing follows my own journey I went through when it came to swearing. When I was a kid and early teenager, I NEVER swore. I would use word-replacements for swears. Often that affected my writing! I couldn’t have characters swear because I couldn’t swear!

A lot of the reason why a lot of the old Volume One dialogue was so wonky in the first place was because I had that affliction affect everything. I used to write formally. My brother told me once that using “cuz” instead of “because” in dialogue looked stupid, he thought “I dunno” looked sloppy compared to “I don’t know” so I HAD to write “because” and “I don’t know." God I had a lot of weird messed up rules.

So nobody could speak in slang, which affected characters like Paulo and Daisy considerably! That’s changed since then, of course, and I’ve been able to get characters to use words I don’t ever use, but feel fitting for them.

Well, you can tell that she obviously didn’t mean that. It’s pretty easy to tell she was only caught up in the heat of the moment, since he was yelling at her.

Then again, Paulo isn’t completely at fault. “Love ain’t a one-way street.” Even though Jazzie has a lot of things happening in her life, she still has to find SOME time to hang out with him. That’s just the way it’s gotta be.

On another note, Jazzie looks SO awesome in that first panel. It reminds me of Sandy playing volleyball in “To The Top”.
