Veronica: Sue has some good intentions, but still needs to work some biases of her own whoops

Today marks the start of a new style, update schedule, all sorts of stuff. I’m drawing on huge paper, using coloured inks and copic markers as well as trying a few new things with the character designs. Like On Our Own was back in the day, this chapter is a bit of a style experiment.. so I hope you enjoy as I work things out!

Also, a huge site update took effect today! As a part of the cleanup, we removed the last two temporary chapters. Find them on the BCB Repost Tumblr if you like. But more importantly, we completely revamped the post-Volume-Two archive with all the updates we made for Volume Three (soon to go on sale!) A giant amount of art and dialogue fixes applied, so those with time to burn might like to revisit Rehearsal and onward?

Anyway, see you on Wednesday (remember the new update schedule, and read the news post if you haven’t!)

A preview of the upcoming BCB page.

The next page is up early for patrons. Join the BCB Patreon!

This new style so ADORABLUUUURRGGGHHH!!! Sorry, just puked up a rainbow there. ^^;

A David looks like he’s angry at Paulo on the last panel……DavidxSue anyone? X3 but in seriousness, maybe this would be a chapter about David bringing the group of friends together again, in an actual serious matter. Idk but that’s good guess to start with right?

“All bodies are beautiful”.

Sure, you can believe that - beauty is in the eye of the beholder so there’s nothing wrong with that statement.

That said, not all body type are equally healthy. Being overweight is hard on your body, and should be discouraged for the same reason we encourage people not be sedentary.

I love the new style. So colorful! Every chapter I read is different. I am glad your doing a chapter on weight. Both obesity, anorexia, and bohemia are huge problems. When I was about fourteen or fifteen I was in my second year of middle school. I hated school because I was 5’3, 116 pounds, in size 6 pants, and getting called fat because I have wide hips. The school knew about it but didn’t care. When I transferred out of school because of bullies and my weight problem I was 105. I should have been 125 at least. Once I went into a charter school I started to think better about myself because of the teachers I met. Weight is a serious issue with teenagers especially and should not be taken to far ether way.

MissLadyScarlet January 20, 2014, 1:38 PM America/New_York.

Taeshi’s new style uses less lines and in stead focuses on the form of the character. this is important because lines do not exist in a 3d space, so taeshi has actually makes a more believable composition. In shout less lines means more depth of field and the page is going to look less flat over all.

Its good to see you trying out new styles and developing your art. I think this is really good style, but my main issue is the coloring. It feels very faded, kinda washed out. The push towards more stubby, cartoony bodies is an attempt to avoid the “furry” look that comes with properly-proportioned bodies and instead do something more distinctive. I think the designs don’t go far enough, and Veronica might move even further along with time… it’s actually hard to break those habits of wanting to make sure nobody looks too short, limbs aren’t too stubby. It’ll take time to figure out.

As for the colours, we could have made it more vibrant but we decided to done down the contrast and vibrance of the older watercolours. Together with the burnt umber ink, I think it’s really attractive.

I LOOOOOOOVE your new style!! The eyes look particularly pretty!

I didn’t want to mention it before, but in the previous style, Paulo’s cheek fur for example, looked a skootch too angular. This new style looks softer and a little more natural.

I wish I could watercolor…so pretty… But alas, my forte lies with prismacolor markers.

Trying out a new style, huh? That’s cool.
I like how the first place Sue looks at is her butt, when Paulo insinuates she’s fat. (Personally, I’d look at my stomach. Guess Sue’s just more sensitive about dat butt).
I like the reference on the Big Fat Movie. Nothing like watching an hours worth of some guy eating a crap ton of fat, greasy food, getting obese and clinically ill, and then trying to break off from the habit.
Remember people: Only in America does stuff like this fly and get serious consideration.

@Suitcase: I think that going for the Stubbier, shorter look is a better idea in the long run. It may make them look a bit more baby-faced as some of the comments have been pointing out, but I think I prefer this more cartoony style for these Characters. It definitely makes this comic stand out from others who also use Animal characters, but make them very human-like shape.

I can see where you guys are heading with the colours, and I think it may be a great idea for your style. I still personally prefer more vibrance, and wouldn’t mind seeing just a bit more color (Only a bit more. like, 10%) but this also has its charms. It does feel very soft, and combined with the style its pretty adorable. :3

@MissLadyScarlet: I think by Bohemia you actually meant to say Bulimia. Also, I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. I know from experience that kids can be jerks. Mad Lucy

Don’t let a few bad words get you down. If someone has a problem with your weight it doesn’t matter as long as you are at a healthy weight… they can cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it for all I care. Don’t starve yourself or overeat yourself into an early grave because somebody else doesn’t like how you look. It’s annoying how cruel some kids can be. :(

I think I’ll have to calm down and be quiet for a while before I say something stupid out of anger… if I haven’t already.

I’m excited for the new chapter, and I’m loving the entire thing… but at the same time, I kind of don’t want another chapter about all the Roseville people doing things. I want another chapter about Sandy. Or one about wherever Blur went (Perhaps he followed Lucy and her pets?). Or maybe one showing how Lucy is holding up (I’m guessing she’s not doing to0 well). I’m sure all these are planned for the future, and that asking is completely unnecessary, but I can’t help it.

Took a brief stroll through the archives to see if I could see any changes. Man, the dialogue changes in ‘pillow talk’ completely changes the tone of the forced kiss between mike and lucy. @Sam: You’re Lucy’s older brother, you should know by now that Lucy is out of the hospital and has been transferred out of Roseville High. She is still alive someplace far away from here.

Well, since you are here, Sam, I would like to ask you a random question: do you think Lucy is doing well with her hearing aid now? (Seriously, why else would she be at the hospital? … okay don’t give me that look, I know what really could have happened to Lucy, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it… just let me dream for a while longer, that she got a hearing aid and is now living a somewhat happier life in Rickter). Even though Lucy could easily be nowhere near Rickter and she could be having a miserable time trying to make new friends… but that’s not going to stop me from imagining Lucy becoming friends with Sandy and others to enjoy her time in Rickter. Oh the adventures and drama those two would experience. >:D

@Tails: Hi. *hugs* Hmm, I wonder where our friend Bluefox could be? What do you think about what I said to Sam? I know he’s not actually the BCB Sam, but I can pretend. :P

If the attempting to abandon the “furry” look is because of perverted idiots, then I’ve gotten some news for you:

It’s a waste of time.

Even goddamn My Little Pony has been sexualized and fetishized by creeps.

It is downright proportional with popularity, and going “littlest pet shop” style like what the current directions seems to be heading is malplaced effort that also leads to a art style that doesn’t suit the storyline.

It’ll be like a watered-down copy of Happy Tree Friends then.

Hmm. It is nice coloring, but for me it is a little hard on the eyes. The colors blend in a bit and create a sort of chaotic blend before I squint and focus on individuals. Darker lines would help, maybe a little shadowing behind the characters. the “On our own” style was great. The colors really stood out, were sharp and easy to focus on. Something like that would be great.

If I’m honest I don’t really like the look of this style. For me it’s too cutesy and makes all the character look quite young. Also Astoria has a point in saying the colors all blend in with each other. I thought that Fade Away and the last chapter were the best style used. @Suitcase As much as I love the coloring, and how cute this looks they look like a bunch of elementary kids which I guess could be confusing? And it really really won’t take away the “furry-ness” of it by making them cute little chibis, the only thing that will take that away is to make them human. Just don’t worry about it you don’t have to be furries to make a furry-styled comic, have fun with it.

David looks like he’s about to bust Paulo up for that comment XD

We have no problem with porn, but we’ve always been uncomfortable with the balance struck between “well-drawn in a more detailed style” and “does not belong on furaffinity”. (The discomfort stems from aesthetics more than self-consciousness, FWIW.)

I think BCB has always leaned cartoony and never went too far in the humans-with-dog-heads direction, but deliberately veering away from human proportions goes a long way to avoiding what became a difficult balance. I agree that there is some disconnect between the cute characters and heavy drama, but that is something pretty deeply embedded in the comic, and could optimistically be said to lighten it up.

My Little Pony or Littlest Pet Shop is hardly the inspiration — we’d be listening to the people clamouring for sharp digital lines if that were the case! But “animated” stylisation is certainly a goal.

This is so gorgeous it hurts. I think the stubby, childlike bodies are a little too Lucky Star for my tastes (and any mention in-comic of adult topics might have a weird lolicon vibe), but my gosh I am just adoring the colours. If this comic gets any prettier I’ll have to read it through sunglasses to avoid outright watercolour fugue. Soft edges, detailed lighting, nice warm subdued palettes; everything about the look of this is just so invitingly pleasant.

I like the art style, it gives the ears some more expression, and makes the characters look younger. Though I am a bit worried it makes them look a bit too young. It is far too early to tell, but I figured I would voice my first thoughts upon seeing it. Either way though, it looks fantastic.

@Supertails19/Blue fox Christ, it’s been a while since I heard from you two.

Anyway, I can see where this storyline is going from this page. Sue’s going to feel insecure of her weight, so she starts to limit herself from food. When the main cast starts to notice her changes, Abbey gets worried and goes to her house to check up on her. He finds Sue on the floor, malnourished and writhing in pain. Abbey rushes her to the hospital and when she comes to, they both decide to end their rivalry and become friends.

If this doesn’t happen, which I highly think it will, this would make for some good fanfiction 8-D

I agree. Being healthy is important.

But, there is a major societal problem with shaming someone by calling them fat, ugly, or not pretty. It turns outer appearance into the defining factor on a person’s character. And it isn’t. And if you think it should be, you need to take a long look in the mirror and consider what kind of subliminal bullying you might be doing by putting someone’s self-worth to their physical traits.

Furthermore, I put forth that telling a perfectly healthy weighted teenager like Sue, that she is a fatty is quite common in young adult circles. It is wrong to treat anyone that way. Society encourages us to say, “If they are fat, then what worth do they have?” And the answer is damn plenty past their ability to strut in a swimsuit on vacation.

Normally, I like the real personality that Paulo tries so desperately to hide. The slightly awkward, self-conscious, and somewhat caring/concerned young adult. We see bits and pieces of this guy whenever Lucy is around.

That being said, his patriarchal ******* front that he keeps up for his idea of a “Cool-man” is encouraging body shaming right now and it needs to die.

Hahaha, is that good enough conversation starter for you? :P

I like the new style so far! I think the more abstract use of lines works well for something like BCB. It makes things feel a bit more mold-able, and less static, and encourages the use of a lot of colors. Which seems to be a very important key to mood setting and atmosphere in the comic. I look foreward to you becoming more comfortable with the style!

my only thought would be maybe make the eye outlines hard colors, to me (and this is just an oppinion) sue’s eyes look a bit odd lined in the lighter color. It doesn’t make the the color of her eyes stand out either. However! this is merely a thought, if it is what you like, then by all means keep doing it. The comic is your work after all, and you can make it however you like.

To be honest, I don’t like this new style at all. It’s bland coloring and you aged the characters back like 7ish years. Your old style had much more depth in the character faces and personaility. Your vain attempts to escape the furry culture is futile for as long as you draw animals with human qualities whatsoever you are anthropomorphic. Also, on that note I think I’m quite done with the furry bashing. I’ve gritted my teeth because I thought this comic was pretty awesome, but I don’t think ill be supporting blind hate for those of us who enjoy anthropomorphic art and anthropomorphic representation. Yes there is a few disgusting pigs in the fan base who get off to beastaility, but the majority of furry fans and artist enjoy the psychological connection of interpreting ourselves as a furry character. Let me be the first to say it is no different from larping or other role play activities. You should he embracing the sane section of anthropomorphic culture rather than bashing it because every single fan who reads and likes it is part of that culture

The new style really shows your talent with watercolors, and for the most part I like it more than the older one. The only thing I would really change is the paleness of some colors, since the characters seem to fade into the background a bit. As for the faces and body styles, you should go with whatever seems right to you. Ignore the arguments about furries, etc. and go with whatever best suits your style and preference. You’ve maintained the classic looks of characters through every change in style/media, and I have no doubt that you’ll continue to produce excellent pages with this different approach.

“But, there is a major societal problem with shaming someone by calling them fat, ugly, or not pretty.”

Depends. Depends on your use of the word shaming - as I’d use to say bring shame to. Technically, a calorie counter is a great way to shame most people (A few of my friends where ashamed when they realized that energy drinks weren’t calorie free - and in fact where quite heavy on that count! This pretty much made them cut down on the amount of them pretty fast.)

Now, going off and getting into someone’s face and yelling at the top of your lungs “Ugly ugly fasto” is insulting - and people shouldn’t have to put up with that. But there is a major difference between the two - in the same way we shame people from stealing while no one sane would go nuts on someone who’s starving for stealing bread. That said, purely objective things aren’t things you should shame - being black, having braids, being gay, etc, just have no basis in requiring shame unless you have internalized prejudices popping it up - just to get that out of the way.

“Furthermore, I put forth that telling a perfectly healthy weighted teenager like Sue, that she is a fatty is quite common in young adult circles. ”

Let’s be frank on two counts here - or let’s be sue, I’m all for trying new things. 1) Kids say really stupid ****, I don’t think most adults would say “You’re 10 pounds bigger then normal OBVIOUSLY YOU’RE RETARDED” outside of celebrities and youtube comments. 2) Considering the fact that “drastically overweight” children (12 and 400 pounds overweight) have been taken from their family since that’s ruled criminal levels of child neglect - obesity in children need to be taken seriously.

3) Paulo’s a tool. >.>

@MikexLucyForever, it was temporary, it’s done now.

So fat shaming is immoral now, eh? I guess that means the whole country of Japan is morally bankrupt! Gomen nasai!
As a fairly pudgey guy, I can tell you, sometimes shame means the difference between staying at “squishy but attractive” and growing into “horrible ham-beast.” But appearances aside, appearance isn’t really what’s being shamed, is it?
What people shame is the pointless overeating, the careless lack of self-consciousness, or the abject laziness. Not all cases of fatitude are due to gross neglect, but it’s difficult to tell at a glance that someone is round because they’re a programmer with no barbells and not because they eat ice cream for breakfast.
So in lieu of precision shame, it’s a fog of shame all around to keep humanity in general healthy and in line.

Don’t tell an artist how to do their work. If you don’t like it, whatever. But don’t tell them they should ‘go back to the old style’ or ‘this be look seems like a step backwards.’

It’s not your comic and it’s important for an artist to find their own look. Changing styles is how you grow. I don’t want anyone here wants @Trash to feel artistically limited, ESPECIALLY after what was discussed in the news post.

I understand trying to get away from the furry look (which has already been done pretty well) but I don’t want to keep reminding myself that these are high-school kids and they’re not in kindergarten. Either way, as long as there are human-like cats, you’re not going to escape the furry tag.

@Redline If you’re so much more knowledgable, create a better comic instead of just putting down legitimate content creators.

Anyway, on the off-chance that any of the creators of the comic see this, remember that there’s far more fans than snobby cartoon connoisseurs. Psychologically, it takes approximately two positive responses to outweigh one negative one, so I realize that this won’t make up for the other comment, but it will make up for about half of it.

@Imminow If he had said, “I don’t like this comic,” I would have understood, and then it would have been like the chef argument if I had countered it that way. But if you told a chef “You simply don’t understand how to properly season a salmon fillet,” and then told them that you actually had no idea how you wanted them to do it, it would be an unhelpful critique. So the chef analogy isn’t that reasonable.

Two (for Taeshi), your new art style seems to to have changed alot more than just a few lines. The style makes the characters pop less, but that’s because a few of them actually are supposed to blend color-wise. In other words, it’s more realistic, even if people don’t agree. Plus, I can imagine it’s tough to change styles on the fly without missing a beat.

Three, I wish both of you the best. I hope things get settled so you both can be super happy together. Mostly cause I’m a sucker for romance stories. Sidenote (for Taeshi)… Take a short vacation if you need it. You aren’t failing by taking some time off. Saving yourself from falling apart, breaking down, and such, even in the smallest ways, is always worth the effort. The closer to breaking you are, the more likely you’ll mess up accidentally and feel worse for it.

Well this explains why they had so much difficulty in the last few strips.

I noticed how the art style change with the general mood of the chapter, in volume 2 it was with mostly Shades of blue, representing how it was the hardest time for the characters… ._. Volume 3 watercolors showed how things were slowly getting more calm, and maked everything lightier, and contrasted sad emotions. This art style shows a more happy mood from the characters, showing how the characters are slowly moving on. :D

Looking really forward for the next page upload :D

@Suitcase. I think the charm is starting to work. More and more people are starting to talk to me (in real life) when I wear it. Those who notice it actually like it (they find it cute). I’ve had a hard time making friends (except on the internet) and I’m really happy that I’m making more (since I’ve always had to change friends, either because I had to move or because I had to change schools which pretty much screws up my social life. I still got my best friends but I have had to make friends since I’m in a new school and it hadn’t gone well for over half a year (half a school year). But now it’s going really well. Guess this charm isn’t cursed at all :D.
Oh. By the way. Good luck living in the United States and be extremely careful. People are allowed to have weapons D:

Paulo’s smile reminds me so much of Naruto’s when he drew on the Hokage statue faces

Oh you~

Whoa! First would-be-but-no-longer-is update time and the knives come out. Sorry, didn’t look at the page ‘till now.

A few general comments:

It is really very heartening to hear the nice things people have written about the page and the news post. There are some kind people here, and we’ve got some lovely emails too. I wish I could be more personal, but I have to leave it at this: thanks!

I’m being fairly tolerant of comments criticising this new page because even when people are being a tactless about it, it reflects a legitimate viewpoint. However, I find it harder to be OK with negative people these days because I see them as such a drain on the creative people I know. I learned a lot myself about how delicate you have to be if you want to communicate something negative to a creative person. Some people haven’t learned about that yet, and it’s a shame, because nuanced opinions are always more interesting to read. All I’ll say is that casually dismissive and negative comments do far more harm to Veronica’s motivation than jus about anything else, and I’ve yet to read anyone with a rude attitude that had something that wasn’t either misinformed or obvious. Please be tactful and recognise the impact of grossly dismissive words on a very fragile mind.

(P.S. “Redline” undermined everything he said by sockpuppeting under different names to support himself :S It is interesting how the most negative people tend to carry baggage like that.)

Finally, It is a strange thing to take what I said earlier on this page and twist it into “we don’t want BCB to be furry so the characters now look like babies”. What you are seeing is an attempt to try a more-cartoonish stylisation, and it is gonna take some time for Veronica to get comfortable with the new forms.

Some individual replies:

@Lordofrye All countdowns on the site should indeed be updated for the new schedule! Can you explain where you saw the bug?

@NLights Whoa, of course that wasn’t intentional! Thanks for the heads up.

@Sambo That is a perfect idea. I will do it soon.

@Jonas97face I will take your report onboard and add it to future copy for the Store page.

@Blue fox
Honestly i would have acted the exact same way as paulo did back at the museum xD
But yes, being a bit nicer would be good for paulo too.

I just noticed it now, but if panel 8 is indicative of the future, Mike’s new eyes are gorgeous!

Paulo picks on Sue, this happens. He’s not doing anything really bad, and he might’ve just been trying to get a reaction out of her. One comment from a guy that she knows is a real brat should not drive her into anorexia like some of you people are saying it will. These two butt heads all the time, and his grin there says “I’m just kidding around, but it was funny to make you look at your butt anyway”.

Paulo isn’t being a bully, he’s just being a brat. A bully would do a hell of a lot worse than just make a joking comment like that. She knows and we know that he’s not intending any real harm by it and name-calling is uncalled for in the comment boxes.

Now, about the comic. I adore the watercolors, they’re quite beautiful, but I did prefer the more defined lines of the previous style more. Not bad for an experiment, though. :)
