Transcript

*Mike kneels at the back of the alleyway, surrounded by a dumpster and trash bags. He stares at a radio, the source of the music. His friends stand around him.*

*Sue puts her hands on her hips, looking annoyed.*
Sue: It’s some kind of weird prank. Can we just get back to the street?
*Lucy looks around the area.*
Lucy: ???

*Mike folds his arms, looking upset. He’s still flushed from the alcohol.*

Mike: ITSCH TOO LOUD!!
*Mike smashes the radio against the wall, cracking it open.*

*Paulo folds his arms and smiles.*
Paulo: Ya coulda just turned the volume down.
*Mike sits and looks at the smashed-up radio, putting a finger to his mouth.*
Mike Oh right.

*Lucy sighs.*

Alejandro: Yeah, you really should have..
*Lucy’s eyes go wide and her ears perk up.*

*Lucy turns back, raising an arm to her chest. Paulo, Daisy, Sue and Mike all turn to see Alejandro and Toby standing behind them, grinning smugly.*

*Mike smiles.*
Mike: Oh, heya, bar guy! Whatsch up!

*Alejandro smiles back.*
Alejandro: Oh, not much.. Just looking for my money back. With change.

*Mike glares back. Lucy, Sue and Daisy look worried. Paulo frowns.*

Author commentary

Veronica: Since the original Confrontation (a grid comic, but replaced even before Volume One was published) was basically half as long as this new version, does this mean we’re technically on page four? Proper panels sure make sequences longer.

It’s interesting how the grid format means A LOT of story can be told, but there’s so many cool things you can do with proper panels! I guess there’s sacrifices all-around, but I don’t regret eventually switching to proper panels. Makes things much cleaner and helps with pacing and helps with making certain scenes feel more important.

Anyway.. uhh.. these guys.

Wow, he has a partner, AND he used a radio to lure them into an alley? WHAT A FREAKING GENIUS. How he learned enough about psychology to figure out that would work is beyond me, and how he thinks two against five is a good idea even if one of them is intoxicated is beyond me, but I still have to congratulate this guy on being one of the most brilliant muggers i have ever seen/heard about in fiction. Or does he just spend WAY too much time obsessing over mugging people for money?
