Daaaammn Augustus! Shots fired! He’s actually saying it , and Lucy is not stopping him, now THAT’S intresting o.o.. All you saying that Lucy will hit Augy after this, are we forgeting she changed her ways? In a way she actually looks bit relieved that someone said it to to Mike. Not pleased about the way it was done, I’m sure, but yeah.

WitchDoll

Comment ID #32766

eh, I don’t think she’s going to hit him, but after Double Down you can’t say she’s completely changed. she still resorts to violence when pushed too far

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #32767

She’s not relieved, I think she’s frustrated and also the fact he’s basically revealing all this without her consent.

He’s basically violating and breaching her trust and boundaries

Rocky Wolfknight

Had to go back and check. Yeah, true, a slap IS wrong, though as bad as it sounds, I think she respects Augy more than Paulo… but who knows!

yeah, I agree, which is why I don’t think she’s going to do that. just not completely discounting the possibility

Augustus and Lucy do nothing but piss me off every single time they’re on screen

sadboy

Comment ID #32776

Lucy’s not doing anything wrong, I’m pretty sure she’s hating this as much as Mike is.

Augustus can go kick rocks though, I’m surprised that many people are still heralding him as the bodyguard of the century when he’s blatantly betraying her trust and making her relive one of the most traumatic nights of her life all because he’s spiteful that Mike went back on his word over a boundary that Lucy never asked him to initiate in the first place.

Steven Marshall

Comment ID #32777

“All to keep her from getting in the way of you and your girlfriend right?”

So he doesn’t actually know why Mike said what he said. Really curious to see where this goes!

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #32778

i wonder if mike even fully knows why mike said what he said! mike has tended to center it all around sandy—even his realization that lucy’s physical bullying was bad (sandy got upset repeatedly hearing about it). in eternal flame he seemed eager to throw lucy’s past violence to the wayside and she had to point out to him again how unkind she was. mike’s own self awareness is definitely at play in what happens next too but given that he is mentally unwell, i am not very confident about it. maybe david will chime in with his weird moments of observational insight? who knows

Aria

Comment ID #32779

That’s honestly a fair point. Even at the time he often would rationalise Lucy’s behaviour with stuff like “i was kinda a jerk to, so i had it coming”

I’m eager to see what happens next!

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #32780

I don’t get why people get so bent on the physical aspect. They started when they were super young kids and it was mutual. They even did martial arts together. They got older it became less cool for Mike to be involved with physical contact and Lucy started hitting harder with age. Their relationship wasn’t abusive, it just needed to evolve. He could have said stop at any time, and by the fact she left his life without much fight he could’ve just left in general with no issues. I’m really unsure where the abuse aspect ever comes in.

Potat-Dragon

Comment ID #32781

Abuse victims will often try to rationalise the abuse if it’s from someone they care about. “That’s just how Lucy is” was a phrase often said back then.

There are many psychological reasons why a abuse/bully victim would not speak up, that doesn’t suddenly make it okay.

If you would get send to court for beating someone up on a regular basis i don’t think the “but they didn’t tell me to stop” defence would get you far

The fact that they did martial arts honestly makes it even worse. I know for a fact that if i did what Lucy did and my martial art teacher would find out he would not only ban me from his class but go out of his way to make sure i’m not accepted anywhere else.

Good martial art places are very strict on the “don’t use what you’re taught here outside unless in self-defence” policy

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #32782

i’m on the in between! i agree that their relationship wasn’t abusive but it certainly was toxic. abuse denotes a dynamic of power and control—i don’t feel that lucy or mike ever had a consistent power dynamic of one over the other. they were both kids doing the kid thing of fighting, boundary pushing, and working out their insecurities and bad behaviors (lucy with physical rough-housing way past the point of developmental appropos, mike with boundarylessness that hurts others and himself). and now they’re doing the growing up thing where Consequences Happen, patterns get broken, and new identities start to form. they’ve engaged in bullying behaviors towards each other, but it is not cut-and-dry! this is a bit armchair-y of me, but i think a lot of readers identify more with mike or lucy depending on what kind of kid they were or experiences they had (me included)! which leads to some intense responses or thoughts on their dynamic. but both are just teens with a lot of problems right now. all that to say: vero does a fantastic job of writing teenagers!

Aria

Comment ID #32783

Yeah let’s just make Lucy relive everything that sent her spiralling, that’ll help.

I do think if Lucy was going to stop him from saying it, she would have. But I dont think Augustus is done, especially if he knows about lucy and mike kissing under the tree just for him to go back to Sandy.

Aesthete Noire

Comment ID #32787

I don’t care if you defend August

This is wrong and messed up on what August is doing.

Will it call Mike out on everything, yes,

But he’s also violating and breaching Lucy trust and boundaries too.

This isn’t defending or helping her, he’s doing it just out of spite just because he can’t control a situation that’s now spiraling out of his hand. And decided to find the closest thing to blame it all for happening.

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #32788

My man, it’s not that extreme as you make it to be. Did you have a similar situation? I’m sorry if you did

WitchDoll

It really depends on what is and isnt public info at the school, which Im having a hard time discerning myself. But it is absolutely a huge deal to announce someones suicide attempt and institutionalization to relative strangers, no matter your age.

theoktony

Comment ID #32790

you might be right, but we haven’t seen quite what lucy’s full reaction is yet, nor her full motive in trying to stop augustus! we know she hates being babied for sure but i have so many questions! is some part of her still trying to protect and comfort mike? it remains to be seen…

Aria

Comment ID #32791

NGL when I say this, as much as Mike has a lot to account for, this is just heart wrenching. The guy KNOWS he’s screwed up so badly and currently just wants to make amends and move on with his life. I really understand where Aug is coming from, but jeez…. this isn’t doing anyone any favors. Nothing good ever comes from nursing past grudges (as understandable as they may be) . 😞

Seabreeze630

Comment ID #32792

Not to mention he isn’t doing this for Lucy.

He’s basically violating and breaching her trust SO HARD

AND IN A PUBLIC PLACE WITH OTHER PEOPLE

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #32793

Also a wild theory, Aug will use this to isolate Mike from James as a new friend, leaving him vulnerable to Alejandro and Toby. Alej’s line from Chapter 40 “Moving On”, “Green eyes will hear from me soon enough. Him and his little girlfriend” got me thinking this is a likely possibility.

So does James genuinely mean anything to Mike, like as himself, or does he moreso just represent Mikes fear that if his worst moments are revealed, he’ll never be able to make new friends who see him in a pure light again? (Which ofc isnt true, or at least shouldnt be.)

theoktony

Comment ID #32797

This is probably going to end with Lucy slapping or lashing out at august for bringing her former best friend into a low place and unburying her trama.

I don’t know how James is going to react to all this, but he’ll probably have mixed feelings about Mike (Shock, Confusion, Disappointment, Pity).

I doubt that Lucy will immediately forgive or be cordial with Mike again, but I doubt that she will leave him in the abyss and might try to convince James and David to not give up on him and support him at his lowest point so he doesn’t end up like…

…how it ended up for Lucy.

Heartz13

Comment ID #32798

Mike never told Augustus that he went toward Lucy when they talked in Burnt Bridges, and we assume Lucy never told Augustus what fully happened in Eternal Flame. I would say it’s safe to assume that Augustus felt some idea of what happened, but it also stings more seeing Mike try to brush it off like nothing happened and begin to disregard Lucy’s feelings for his own. Especially after telling Augustus that he was remorseful and was going to give them their space. You can probably get a sense that Augustus knows what happened to some degree given she was freaking out again because of Mike in Burnt Bridges.

BaronvonJiggly

Comment ID #32799

I find it intresting that Lucy let him say that. If it was me, i know I would’ve been dragging my friend from there by the coat to stop them from saying anything, and she had a few frames to do that. but eventually she just.. let it happen. So i wonder.

WitchDoll

Comment ID #32800

me too, i am VERY curious what is going on with lucy rn. also wonder what the significance is that her trauma dreams lately don’t include mike? i fear a reveal is coming…

Aria

Comment ID #32801

Introduce James just to tell him last years drama and probably get him to kick Mike off the track team, making Mike a self fulfilling prophecy with what he said to Lucy happening to him

Fiver

Comment ID #32802

I hope Lucy at least acknowledges she didn’t treat Mike well either and their relationship turned toxic fast. Mike before Sandy expressed feelings for Lucy, but Lucy didn’t take the chance, only when Mike got with Sandy did she finally realize she had romantic feelings for him, and then proceeded to try and push her feelings onto him, while also being kind of physically aggressive towards him. It doesn’t excuse what Mike said and did, but Mike also has been true about not approaching Lucy. It can’t be helped that they would be in the same general area in a public school. Even Lucy has kept that boundary. Augustus is violating Lucy’s boundaries and I hope she calls him out for it, even though the damage is done.

Kaleigh Hohenthaner

Comment ID #32803

Augustus literally asked him to let her just have the track during lunch. Lucy wanted space away from him. Mike decided and we see this in the chapter THAT HE CHOSE TO IGNORE THE REQUEST AFTER AGREEING TO IT.

Augustus is reminding Mike what happens when you go back on your word.

things that happen: outing someone else’s PRIVATE MEDICAL DETAILS in the name of protecting them and to guilt trip someone else.

no. what Augustus has done here is disgusting. this isn’t about Lucy any more, he’s just out to hurt Mike and doesn’t care about the collateral damage

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #32805

Augustus is dangerous close to saying “isolate yourself for Lucy’s comfort”. It may seem like a small, non-issue, but if Augustus was at the arcade, do you think it would’ve end well?

If Mike has no haters again: assume I’ve met the pearly gates.

Nah Mike you don’t get mess with peoples emotions so harshly that it causes not one but 2 mental breakdowns. I’m glad Augusts finally just said it because too many people were giving him a pass because he’s all emo now

Because it seems like some people have forgotten, Lucy was working hard to change her behavior and had just told Mike she was happy for him that Sandy texted when he blew up on her in “December”. So while Augustus is definitely messing up here, his interpretation of why Mike blew up at Lucy doesn’t seem far off the mark. Also, Mike was straight up awful to Lucy when she first came back and then broke her heart to pieces in “Eternal flame” he needs to face that for real instead of just saying how sorry he is and then backtracking all the time. He’s not evil, but he’s definitely been a real jerk lately and mostly because of Sandy. He needs to get help, but him being in a bad place doesn’t make his behavior okay. Lucy’s behavior was messed up, a lot of it was mutual, but she went too far. However, she did realize her mistakes when she was made aware and tried to fix things. Mike went after her only after Sandy texted, they were having a good time before that. Augustus is definitely not going about this right at all, he’s airing Lucy’s private business and being a bully. His desire to protect Lucy is understandable, though especially with how recently Mike hurt Lucy in “Eternal flame.” At the end of the day they’ve all messed up and all need some therapy, but as much as I hate how this is going, I do think Mike needs to really face what he did to Lucy and is still doing to his friends in the name of being with Sandy.

I agree. To say out loud that someone has been to the psych ward IS crossing a line. That information is private. Even if Augy trying to protect Lucy and cross a point really hard to Mike, that info should not be said with more people around. I still think Augy is going too far because of Melanie and because he never had a true friend before, but he does need to learn that he’s not executing this well at all. :(

WitchDoll

Comment ID #32812

Yeah, it’s definitely not okay. Unfortunately, given how he grew up and the gang, I think he just doesn’t know any better yet. No one’s ever told him where the line is, but he’s definitely messing up big time.

I honestly hope that Mike and Lucy find closure with each other (maybe become friends again at some point with some personal boundaries; which is least likely to happen, but one can hope).

I also hope that James doesn’t distance himself from Mike and if he does get angry with mike, I hope he finds it in his heart to forgive him and be there for him.
