Author commentary

Veronica: Wow, even dropping the mother formalities here and there, Sandy sure is changing! Aren’t you noticing her growth, Mike? Who are you looking at? What are you doing?

Damn, Mike gave up getting to make out with Lucy or James for THIS drivel?

In that self-inflicted way reserved for indecisive teens.

You can see his life being sucked out by just listening to her talk and talk about herself and her life. He’s just a wall

Umm. Does Mike like James that way? I don’t even know anymore

I think the most telling thing about James’ confession was that the reason Mike turned him down was because he was with Sandy. Not that he wasn’t also interested. He seemed flattered in the moment, didn’t say directly that he wasn’t interested, and is probably now sitting with some lingering regret. That’s my subjective read, anyways.

It could also be seeing just how much fun everyone is having, aka seeing what a real relationship or friendship looks like. Meanwhile, he’s pushed everyone away that all he has (so he thinks) is Sandy on the phone which he is clearly getting tired of.

In other words, he just wants what everyone else is having.

I would’ve assumed that too if he wasn’t so laser focused on James lately

I like to think having Lucy in the background is meant to indicate that Mike is missing what he had with her specifically. Seeing James and David growing closer while running might remind him of how he and Lucy would race each other back in the day, and could be doing so now had he stuck by her

The fact that Mike and Lucy have shading while David and James don’t amuses me more than it should. I’m gonna read too deeply into this like an English essay and say that means this’ll be a Mike and Lucy chapter.

I sure hope so. I’ve been hankerin’ for another Mike and Lucy chapter

Aw, Mike, she’s actually talking at- I mean, to you now! That’s an improvement! Hope you enjoy it as much as you deserve…

Also any joy he got from hanging with James seems to be dead. Sure glad you defied Augustus for that one, aren’t you Mike?

This just shows whatever Mike has felt towards Sandy these last years is just Limerence. He built up a persona of her in his head. Previously, they’d send letters occasionally and talk a bit here and there on his landline, making it fun and exciting. Now he got what he wanted, and he’s just so over it. Mike needs to learn that the grass isn’t greener on the other side; it’s greener where you water it.

“It’s greener where you water it.”

That is a beautiful analogy.

I’m almost morbidly curious to see Sandy’s side of these calls. I’m wondering as to whether or not she’s actually aware of how much the roles have shifted now, with Mike as the inattentive one in the relationship. If not, then she’s definitely pretty shallow given the content of her diatribe. But the possibility also exists that she knows, and that she’s just saying literally everything she can to make up for the lack of engagement she’s getting from Mike, or to make up for all the silence she’s given him in the past, or just trying her best to cling to the relationship knowing that it would be her fault.

Cynically, she could also be trying to put Mike in a position where he’d feel too guilty to leave her. He asked to have more time with her and now she’s cancelling plans. He asked her to talk to him more and now she is. So despite still having a valid reason to leave, Mike is stuck in a position where it FEELS like Sandy’s giving him everything he asked for, so he’s be a jerk if he left her now. (not that he’s had a problem being a jerk to people before when his emotions flare up)

Also, hopped back a bit to check, and I know it’s probably just a stylistic thing since the phone is depicted smaller here, but that crack looks like it’s gotten WAY bigger since it was first made. It might be coincidence, but I will choose to interpret it at a clever visual metaphor. :p

This is defently a classic case of, “Be careful of what you wish for..” or better yet, “Be careful about being so desperiate for something that you’re willing to do ANYTHING to get it, or hurt/lose anyone to get, because you might get it, but realize quickly you already had what you actually wanted all along, but now it’s too late”
