Oh yeah, that’s a good point. He’s the one who wants to keep dating Sandy so this is unfair to her.

I was also thinking before this strip came up. Lucy has a tendency to string Paulo along when she’s at her lowest. I wonder if he’ll bring it up.

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39734

The difference is, Lucy was straight up with Paulo about everything, and expressed that she shouldn’t be easily forgiven for it. This whole time she believed she deserved to no longer be apart of the group due to her actions and actually isolated herself from them.

Onistina

Comment ID #39735

If you’re talking about the play she only admitted she just wanted to tide him over after she came back home. And then she flirted with him again when her brother asked someone to take her home

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39736

What happened between her and Paulo before the play wasn’t her stringing him along though. She thought she was giving him what he wanted because she was never supposed to see him again. Either because she was being sent away or she had no intention of surviving. Her latching on to Paulo in the hallway was definitely a dick move after everything.

Zai

Comment ID #39737

That’s not much better. Especially since she didn’t tell him about her intentions beforehand. They got intimate. Full disclosure is required beforehand.

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39738

She was like 15 and apologized to him for it basically as soon as she could when she got back, I don’t know why you’re always talking about things Lucy did that she already recognized, apologized, and made amends for

Snowstar837

Comment ID #39739

I would have left it at that if she hadn’t flirted with Paulo when her brother and Augustus asked her to go home with someone. She also got offended when Paulo said he didn’t like her that way anymore.

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39740

Somehow I don’t think you’re recalling that part in the comic correctly. Because I re-read it recently, and it was clearly Paulo who was mad because he tried flirting with her, and she reminded him she wasn’t into HIM. He even went as far as to say if it was because he hung out with Mike, then he’d drop Mike if that made her happy, and she got mad at him for that.

Onistina

Comment ID #39741

Considering Sandy guilted him into taking her back I can’t say I feel bad for her.

Latrell Walker

Comment ID #39742

I was referring to chapter 114 pg 19-20. She wasn’t mad yet, but she was irked to hear he didn’t like her that way. She even brought it up in the following argument (which started when Paulo said he’d cut Mike off)

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39743

I believe that while Sandy isn’t innocent either, Mike himself has a serious case of “Sunk Cost Fallacy”. He said himself that he has to make the relationship work, or it would all have been for nothing. Something along those lines

CauliFlower

Comment ID #39744

She was irked that he said she was the hottest girl alive because she hates people sexualizing her not because he “rejected” her

Aesthete Noire

Comment ID #39752

Harsh, but fair, but harsh. Longing for the alternate timeline where Mike stayed at the lunch table with the track bros and works on building up healthy friendships with people who aren’t “pining for him.” I know he struggles with feeling like he loses friendships because he doesn’t return their romantic affections, but it seems like he also needs to learn to let go of those kinds of friendships. I think that will also help him feel better about himself and his self esteem. Speaking from experience; it can be a long journey though.

Ara Scythe

Comment ID #39753

Yeah honestly, if he lost all of the people that he hangs with, the only real one he would lose is Daisy. Everyone else, has been pretty shitty towards him and they haven’t been called out enough.

Latrell Walker

Comment ID #39754

Let’s call it as it is: Mike and Sandy are only together because they feel sorry for each other.

But to be fair, it was Sandy who begged Mike to give her another chance, even though he knew it was best for both of them to break up. (Read “On Call” and “Another Flame”)

Profesor Pomelo

Comment ID #39755

Damn James don’t say that, you don’t even know Sandy. So you don’t know if she’s someone to even feel sorry for.

American Psycho

Comment ID #39756

Not to mention he barely even knows these people

Or the deep DEEP rabbit hole it goes of the years they went through together.

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39757

Isn’t that irrelevant? Mike’s girlfriend is supposed to be someone he really likes, enough to date, yet he’s apparently chasing around other people. Any regular person on the outside perspective would feel bad for the other partner if they heard of that situation.

Vito

Comment ID #39758

Meanwhile, James will pine over David. It is unknown whether David will care.

American Psycho

Comment ID #39759

this is too much smh

joey

Comment ID #39760

Honestly, this page kind of gives evidence to the idea that James is quick to toss Mike aside because he was tired of Mike hanging around while he was trying to cozy up to David.

Like, yeah, maybe Mike has ulterior motives and is grasping onto James because he wants attention, but, let’s be real, James has very little concrete evidence of it to be *this* brutal about it. We, as readers, may know about Mike’s past behavior, but James has very little reason to jump on this notion this hard. If you’ve ever had a friend who ditched you as soon as they got a new gf/bf, it feels a lot like that sort of behavior. Selfish and immature.

We can argue James is having a knee-jerk reaction to Mike’s aggressive reaction to Augustus, but, I dunno. I remember high school pretty well, and high schoolers understand “talk shit, get hit” as a rule, even if it’s not recommended since you’ll get in trouble. In this context, it just seems like a convenient excuse for James to push Mike away.

Kind of is a parallel to how Mike threw Lucy aside as soon as Sandy texted him in December.

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #39761

For the record, I’m happy to see Mike finally getting actual social consequences for his overblown reactions. I am just here for the sweet drama sauce, guys.

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #39762

I do want to point out that from James’ perspective, Mike was pretty insistent that he wanted things to work out between himself and Sandy, even if he’s presently miserable with her. Now, learning that Mike apparently has a habit of keeping people in his orbit who are or have been interested in him, I’m sure it all seems particularly scummy and dishonest of him. Is it still an overblown reaction? Probably, lol. They are dramatic teenagers at the end of the day.

Antares

Comment ID #39763

Right. My main point is that James doesn’t have much evidence to believe that’s happening besides a couple random haters starting stuff for no reason. However, I’m sure it’s a rather convenient excuse to toss aside the third wheel. Edit: Of course there’s also the fact Mike isn’t doing himself any favors here. His “poor me” act would put off most people. I just think James has other, more selfish reasons for being this harsh to Mike.

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #39764

What do you mean not much evidence? What would you consider “acceptable” evidence, him being in Mike’s room during December? He gave Mike multiple times to explain himself, asking if it was true, and Mike did NOT deny it. He also attacked Augustus, *not* when the Lucy stuff was revealed, but when Mike’s possessiveness over James was called out! He just saw Mike attack a dude right in front of him when it was pointed out, and then Mike refused to explain himself other than “I was mad”. Given he’s only known Mike for like 3 months, I don’t blame James at all lol

Snowstar837

Comment ID #39765

Evidence would be James seeing similar behavior for himself. You’re free to feel whatever you want, but I and other people think James is acting harshly for little justification. Of course, unless his real reason is to dump the inconvenient third wheel, it would make a lot more sense.

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #39766

ABCDBUTLUR

“I feel sorry for your gf (who I tried to steal you from)”

Sure you do James, sure you do.

SirPants

Comment ID #39768

Honestly, James is coming off as a hypocrite and I don’t know how to explain or put it in words

He’s so narrow minded cause he has NO idea how deep this history/rabbit hole really goes with this group

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39769

Of course he’s a hypocrite, he’s totally a hypocrite. James was knotted with anxiety that Mike might hate him for tricking Mike into a date-date and when the shoe is on the other foot he does exactly what he was afraid Mike would do to him.

I could get it if Mike was really stringing him along, because being lead on by a closeted guy who isn’t willing to break up with his gf sucks, but this? Pff, James isn’t even present enough to be strung along (except by David who is clearly moving on and doesn’t give af)

SirPants

Comment ID #39770

It’s frustrating he only knows one side and doesnt know the other

And Mike got all shutdown for trying to tell his side

Hope Paulo and others will fill him in just to show this isn’t so black and white

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39771

I don’t think he cares about anything Augustus said except the part that involved him. Lucy’s been repeatedly addressed by name and he’s just calling her “that girl” like he wasn’t listening.

SirPants

Comment ID #39772

Would that mean he likely has selective hearing too?

Or you think Theres a deeper meaning of how he got involved?

Like it isn’t the first time this happen before

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39773

Ok I’m sorry James, but I hope David gives you a reality check next time.

You have no idea the history every single one of these people have.

So fricken narrow minded and black and white view

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39774

Okay okay, so Mike did need to hear how he has certain issues from the mouth of someone like James and all but that last line was absolutely brutal. dude what the hell

esinololly

Comment ID #39775

That hurts. Augh, James. Much as I find Mike frustrating and I DO think he has these bad habits being harshly pointed out, I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose. I think he’s at least partially willfully ignorant of the pain it can cause at worst. And it’s kind of plain to see why here and I can’t help but be sympathetic to it! Mike is sensitive and easily overwhelmed when looking these things in the eye. He’s quick to feel defeated by the weight of it and declare himself a bad person, not knowing where to start on changing and it feels hopeless.

The guilt is there, he doesn’t LIKE hurting people. He’s not a malicious kid. But he swings back and forth so wildly from a huge defensive temper and refusing to admit fault, to laying down and simply calling himself unworthy trash who deserves every bad thing. And nowhere in between either of those extremes is an intention to do better. Because when he’s angry, he doesn’t feel like he should have to or he’s done anything wrong, and when he’s feeling defeated, it just doesn’t feel possible. This kid just really needs help.

I don’t hate James for this though. While he is definitely fickle as we know, and this is rough stuff, it’s not necessarily his job to be picking the pieces up for Mike right now. And flippantly as he seems to cheerfully head inside with David, I think this dialogue reveals he’s got a lot on his mind right now under the surface and is pretty hurt by the implications of all this, seeing the recent behavior in a new light. The idea of Mike encouraging and enjoying his rejected feelings, or that his getting in the way of his attempts to move on and get closer to David has been intentional clearly doesn’t sit amazingly well with him. And I can’t reaaaally fault him for that. Even though it’s sad to see him be the one essentially kicking Mike while he’s down, I’m sure that’s not what he’s doing in his own head. Right now he’s focused on his own previously spurned feelings and can’t keep quiet about that, especially when Mike framed that request the way he did.

mobsterseeker

Comment ID #39776

Honestly he’s so narrow minded cause he doesn’t even know these people or the rabbit hole of the history this goes way back to with the main cast.

Plus, if I’m being honest, he’s kinda being a hypocrite cause didn’t he sort of pull similar things with Paulo, Mike when he tried to kiss him, and now David?

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #39777

not… really? the race was a stupid thing, but that was David’s idea, and James wasn’t aware Paulo had a crush on him until that moment. and David’s a free man, there’s nothing wrong with James flirting with him

him trying to get Mike to dump Sandy for him was done in a sucky manner, but it’s not really on the level of things Mike’s being accused of

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #39778

@Rocky Wolfknight Nope. James might be an airhead, a himbo if you’d like, but he isn’t as insecure as Mike or overall a self-centered person to want others to pin for him like Mike. He accepted Mike wasn’t interested and moved onto David. He didn’t even consider Paulo a possibility given he caught glimpses of Paulo and Daisy’s crush on each other but felt naturally flattered that Paulo would feel that way about him.

Jessie Lou

Comment ID #39779

Don’t feel bad for Sandy because I don’t feel bad for Cheaters but that IS a good question.

It was delivered by the wrong guy imo but a good question indeed: DOES he expect people to pine after him forever?

SCD

Comment ID #39786

Mike needs to get out of the black and white lens he goes into. It’s like he sees either things are perfect or they’re horrible. Lucy was his best friend but also his worst bully. These situations are full of context and based on perspective and he needs to hopefully see that. He hurt Lucy, and Lucy hurt him, too. I like this conflict though because you see this sort of mentality even play out in us readers, falling into a Lucy or Mike defender camp. They both acted out in this interaction. They both got physical and in my opinion that took it too far on both their ends. Even still, Mike definitely got socially dog piled, which in some perspectives is justified. He’s snapped at a lot of people for trying to give advice about Sandy, which I think is really that it challenges his perfect relationship image. He’s apologized for some of it at least, but still seems to struggle with correcting that behavior. And the situation with Lucy? It’s a big fat grey area where both of them were not great. The thing to also learn here, if he wants to develop healthier relationships, is it’s not justified to blow up on someone when they do something that hurts you - not if you intend to still have some form of friendship or reconciliation with them. There are other ways to communicate, though I don’t know exactly what that looks like at this point. In regards to lunch, on a totally different note, I genuinely worry about Mike not eating and really pushing himself on a sport. I know EDs are nasty work, and people can have them without even realizing. Maybe that’s a little bit of projection from me as a reader, but if the hints of him ignoring his hunger the past couple chapter are indicating he’s falling into that, I would be very concerned. Because of this black and white thinking, I feel that’s also why he went to a place of “I’m an awful person” when confronted by August before. But compounded with low nutrition and ED type thoughts? That sort of mentality is rough.

Sidneyena

Comment ID #39802

“I knew that? I knew that! But I kinda thought… I could change your mind…” Is his exact words, but he also a few pages later said he respected mikes long distance relationship, so I think it all comes down to “I can see he is sad because of this, but if he wants to stick it out it’s his choice to make”

Inu Kunai

So that’s it huh. Who has Mike got left now? Abbey?

Sidneyena

Comment ID #39804

What about Paulo, and the whole gaming group? He can’t hang out with them at lunch now but they’re not devoid from his life?

Xiro

Comment ID #39805

Paulo, Daisy, and Sue all still want to be friends with him, but since he can’t sit at the table anymore because of Lucy, he’s going to (falsely) take that as his friend’s abandoning him. The track team? James is going to be there during practices and general hangouts among the team, so Mike would probably want to avoid them too.

starblandd

Comment ID #39806

I’ll admit it’s conjecture, but I get the feeling that James’ comments re: Sandy are because, as far as he can see, if Mike had accepted his advances, that’s the end of it, Sandy would just be hurt by a break up and that’s it, while what Mike’s been doing reads to James as more akin to, surprise surprise for this chapter, leading her on when Mike’s nowhere near as dedicated to making it work as he was trying to give the impression of. so I don’t think it’s supposed to come of as hypocrisy, I think James does have cause to believe that Sandy’s being treated worse than his plan to win over Mike did. it still sucked, but I can see why it’s not considered equivalent

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #39807

This feels like such a perfect parallel to December; I hope Lucy is the one that breaks the cycle and reaches out to Mike when she realizes how bad that conversation must have felt.

Either that, or Paulo and Daisy drag Mike out with them and show him what a healthy relationship looks like.

Or Lucy’s mom notices his expression and talks to his parents??

I’ll take anything for the healing to begin!!

*trigger warning*

I really hope Mike doesn’t get the chance to do anything to himself, because he seems like the kind of person who would do it in such a way that he doesn’t leave a mess and maybe no one ever finds him.

OH GOD, WHAT IF HE GOES TO THE RIVER???

Elizabeth Hunter

Comment ID #39808

Also: this parallel works even better BECAUSE James is being so shitty and narrow minded. That’s exactly how Mike was viewing his relationship with Lucy in December!

He was ignoring all of the good parts of their past and focusing on the worst parts. Lucy was abusive and violent, but we’ve also seen that there were good times where they opened up and supported each other.

James had Augustus pouring poison in his ear the same way Sandy was on the phone with Mike back then; acting like there’s only one side to the story and that one person has to be to blame.

This is why black and white thinking is a trap; every situation has nuance, but you have to take the time to look for it. These kids are so stuck on finding the “perfect victim” that they’re turning themselves into the villains.
