Veronica: James is fired up!!! This is music to his ears!!

JamesxLucy is essentially just Mucy but without the baggage and long-distance girlfriends. They’d be racing and climbing trees and trying to one-up each other all the time, Lucy’s dream come true. But it’s not to be! Lucy needs friends that won’t want her romantically anyway, might be good for her health. James is too busy, uhh, not being remotely straight.

Anyway here comes Paulo finally asking the questions all the readers are currently feverishly thinking lol

A preview of the upcoming BCB page.

Proof that Paulo never meant it to Lucy that he would leave Mike behind for her. Lmao

yeah literally everything is opposite to what it seemed. mike’s harsh words to lucy became his reality. the inclusion that paulo would be the least likely to take mike’s side over hers has also been completely turned on its head imo. the irony happening this chapter from december is so multi-layered

Comment ID #40766

To be a bit fair to Paulo, she never asked him to. Lucy just wanted to cut all ties to her former friends at that point in her life. She didn’t care about keeping Paulo around, so she didn’t care if he kept being friends with Mike. Lucy burned that bridge, so what was Paulo supposed to do? Stop being friends with Mike so that he could just continue NOT being friends with EITHER Mike or Lucy? Paulo offered that because he thought that was a condition she would have and that he would be willing to uphold, and instead Lucy gave him the cold shoulder. It’s not on Paulo at that point to uphold that promise if it wasn’t what Lucy wanted in the first place.

Hard facts. But… It would be hard to remain socially faithful to the girl who rejected him so many times…

DreamerKay

Comment ID #40768

For sure! Maybe at one point, he would have done it, but Lucy has been unnecessarily cruel to Paulo lately—at least, from Paulo’s perspective, I’d also interpret Lucy as hating me, haha. Why would you keep loyalty for someone who keeps shoving you off? I’m hoping they’ll be able to talk it out soon. Those two desperately need a chat. (*i also want Lucy to reveal Mike’s most recent mess up because I live for the drama; have to wonder how everyone would feel about that*)

Comacoma

Comment ID #40769

Honestly, I am wondering if the group is just tired of both Lucy and Mikes drama at this point?

It’s been a back and forth ever since.

I feel like it be shock to hear what he did, but at the same time I wonder if they are just numb to this drama between them at this point

could be. another interesting idea is: from what we’ve seen the chapters since eternal flame, daisy and paulo have honestly approached mike and lucy’s conflict (and their individual roles in the dynamic of all 4) in a much more secure and healthy (albeit not perfect) way compared to mike and lucy themselves imo! daisy is willing to move past the shit and let it go (library scene with mike) with no hard feelings, paulo wants to confront things head on (him walking lucy home fight), while mike wants to ruminate and lucy wants to avoid. it actually feels like they’re a perfect foil to mike and lucy in many ways, and that is especially highlighted now as they got together! i think maybe it’s less “they’re tired of the shit” and more they have the emotional maturity specifically in the ways mike and lucy lack(ed)? + this includes paulo taking a more accepting and nuanced response to lucy, also defo agree that paulo’s response of concern for mike is totally fair. it is just funny how things have really turned opposite even if in some ways it was a reasonable shift!

Man James is truly a snake and I Paulo a real one he’s going to see through this bs and hopefully helps Mike

ABCDBUTLUR

Comment ID #40775

Yep, Paulo somehow became Mike’s best friend.

Fiver

Comment ID #40776

Kinda had that thought ever since Eternal Flame. Mike still hasn’t clicked with that yet I don’t think, but Paulo genuinely cares for Mike. Even after Mike blew up at him, Paulo still gave Mike the kick in the ass he needed and, for better or worse, got him to actually open up with Sandy and work on their expectations with the relationship. Paulo has always been really on the ball with helping not just Mike, but all his friends when they need him. I just hope Paulo is enough this time.

Alec

Comment ID #40777

Mike is REALLY lucky that he got back into Paulo’s good graces after the shit he pulled in the past (slamming his face onto the lunch table, exploding at him during Eternal Flame) because if he was still on bad terms with him, dude would have absolutely nobody in his corner. Obviously there still would have been Daisy, who has always been on Team Mike over Team Lucy, but seeing as she’s now dating Paulo and thus would want to stick by him at all times, he wouldn’t even have the benefit of having her in his corner. Him actually being there for Paulo during his lowest moment (New Year’s Resolution) is probably the only smart decision he’s made in what’s felt like forever.

These last couple pages have pretty much cemented James as pretty bad person lol. What a snake

Garry Bathrick

Comment ID #40785

Dunno about bad, just naive and easily manipulated, with a very black and white sense of morality. Probably hasn’t had anywhere near the amount of emotional growth as the rest of his peers, so he probably just sees Mike as “the bad guy.”

Alec

Comment ID #40786

Is it wrong that I’m suspecting James will say something truly wrong and then Paulo decks him across the face?

Domo Plushie

Comment ID #40790

Idk why people are saying James is a snake. He was right there, Mike not only didn’t worry about refuting anything he further made it look like the accusations were true by being violent. Combined with some weirdo behavior of his while he was insecure, he now looks extra guilty. I’m pretty sure James is reasonably distrustful and hurt right now and just doubling down on his crush and his crush’s friends.

Potat-Dragon

Comment ID #40791

Exactly. People only feel this way because we see the behind the scenes that a character in universe can’t.

Vito

Comment ID #40792

Okay. I’m going to go out on the limb and say: Yeah I get it James. The guy you liked seemed like he was more preoccupied with getting you not to leave rather than be honest with his feelings or situation.

Just a reminder that Mike WAS FULLY READY to keep stringing James along. Why should James want to stick around seeing how Mike treats people. Mind you it wasn’t that long ago that Mike was trying to get Lucy back but NOW when she’s possibly getting in the way “she led me on”.

Good on Paulo for caring and being concerned because obviously Mike is going through shit. But it’s not James or even Lucy’s responsibility to help Mike through it.

Frejya

Comment ID #40793

Paulo go get your friendo…..:)

GamerPrincessXI

Comment ID #40794

James is great as like, a friend group C person, yknow? That group you go to for casual talks and maybe sports but not the ones you go crazy with or a little less crazy with like in groups A and B. That casual/friendly acquaintance. I don’t blame him for being mad at Mike, but this is like…a crazy switch up. I know people have been calling him shallow, and he definitely is but this feels a little different somehow.

Anyways again, I don’t think he’s wrong for being angry at Mike after everything that just happened but this feels like he’s fuuuuullly planning on dropping him and if it were any other character I’d assume he’d start crap talking too.

Calico Dragonalia

Comment ID #40795

Hmmm.. What has James experienced to react this coldly..?

DreamerKay

Comment ID #40796

I’m reminded of that car conversation between Matt and Paulo in Fair Game. How Matt talked about how hard it is to find someone and how painful it is to keep hoping, to just WISH you’ve finally found the one, only to end up hurt. The hopeless feeling that it may never get better. In that sense, James is pretty brave for putting his heart out there. I can also see why being manipulated and led on be especially unforgivable to him.

I wonder if David actually considered what the rest of the table would think of this whole thing. At the very least, it looks like Paulo’s gonna have a problem with this.

PAM

Comment ID #40798

I’ve been trying to figure out David for years.. I still don’t understand his thinking Hahaha. I want to get to know him better, so I’m so excited he’s pulled such a big move!

DreamerKay

Imagine David legit has a thing for Lucy and this whole time he’s been waiting for PauloxDaisy to happen so he can go for it, haha.

Comacoma

Comment ID #40800

That would be diabolical on David’s part.

PAM

Comment ID #40801

I’m beginning to wonder if something about this whole Mike situation hits too close to home for James. Given his tendency to fall for people so easily, I’d totally believe James has been burned by crushes “stringing him along” before, keeping him as a “backup boyfriend” because they love the attention (though they never intended to reciprocate). He might have good reason to take this a little personally, or to think Mike was setting him up to be his new Lucy.

It’s nice to see Paulo is still concerned about Mike - and yeah, he’s probably the best person here to go check on Mike, all things considered.

Mandy Seley

Comment ID #40802

Bruh, James “I multitask with crushes sometimes” Fluffcat? The guy who has given every reason to think he was stalking Mike WHILE dating Felix? The guy who was talking about how he wished Paulo kept trying for him even though James had lost interest cause David’s faster?

SirPants

Comment ID #40803

I think you’re on to something there. We don’t know why James transferred from a private school to a public school. I actually think it was the violence that really affected his opinion. Theres a panel during “One Track Mind” where one of the track guys says its a good thing James wasn’t there to see Mike slam Paulo’s face into the table.

Zai

Comment ID #40804

Heeyyy, I was suspecting the same thing! Happy to see other folks are considering James miiiight have his own issues.

Comacoma

Comment ID #40805

I honestly think Paulo won’t go after Mike. I think he wants to, but he’ll remember his words to Lucy about dropping Mike in favour of her. Paulo won’t want to upset Lucy by leaving when she’s just come back to the table. I really think as much as he wants to see what’s up with Mike, Paulo is going to stay put, which will only cause Mike to spiral further when he realises he’s truly alone now

Alex Covey

Comment ID #40806

Woah James is MAD mad. Lot of speculation on why but I kind of hope we get to see him get into why and his perspective. Fickleness is one thing but he genuinely seems angry on a personal level.

mobsterseeker

Comment ID #40807

I wonder if James has had experience with being strung along? He seems the type to fall hard and fast for people and he’s so *obvious* about it! It would be so easy to manipulate the guy if someone was inclined. x: (Or he’s just mad that his 45 minutes of solo David time was being ruined by some guy who wasn’t even really his friend, haha.)

Comacoma

Comment ID #40808

Paulo’s always has Mike’s back, even when Mike has made it hard… I wonder if he will go out and check on him, or stay at the table with his girlfriend and everyone else. I’m sure he hates the idea of Mike being out there alone, especially when it’s clear something big enough to drag Dave, James, AND Lucy back inside happened, but would he stay outside with him? Would Mike even give him that space or would he lash out in frustration again? Ohhhh I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens in the next few pages 👀 🍿

Antares

Comment ID #40809

Paulo’s the man. Like — yes be worried about your bro. Go check on him. He needs SOMEBODY in his corner

whiteboypizza

Comment ID #40811

you know, whoever you’re sitting with for lunch shouldn’t really be that big a deal. this is what, 45 minutes, according to some of the author commentary? Mike’s already had plenty of time outside of that to hang out with others, and even if things with Lucy go back to roughly as they were with everyone else, she didn’t really monopolise anyone’s time. the only reason it feels like Mike is dooming about it is, well, he’s Mike. the signs were there (in some cases outright told to him) that he shouldn’t be relying on being friends with James that much, and now that’s come to pass. he still has everyone else, if he were finally able to get over the fact that not being romantically interested in him any more isn’t the end of that relationship for people who you haven’t been outright told are kinda flighty and hyperfocus on their crushes

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #40812

You’re so right. I used to eat lunch with random underclassmen my senior year because that’s just how the schedule worked out. It was fine. Mike really should be doing himself more favors and figure his shit out regardless, though 😆

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #40813

I was confused why Paulo didn’t seem too thrilled about Lucy rejoining the table, but I guess their last few interactions have been pretty rough! Neither have really apologized for what they said, not in a way that counts. That makes me kind of sad — Lucy and Paulo had some of my favorite interactions in the comic. Maybe this will prompt them to actually talk and rebuild that friendship.

Comacoma

Comment ID #40814

I feel like Lucy helping get Paulo and Daisy together may have smoothed things over between them a little after those more caustic moments, but there’s still a lot of mending the both of them need to do before they can get back to being friendly. I miss their dynamic a lot, though! I want to see them get along now that Paulo doesn’t have any lingering hopes of dating Lucy!

Antares

Comment ID #40815

Right??? With the romance potential nipped in the bud, these two could be so good for each other. I hope we’ll see that happen soon.

Doctor Miles Manners

Comment ID #40819

Leaving *everything else* aside, James just found out a friend he confessed to and was rejected by has been clinging to him for an ego boost specifically because of the rejected feelings. He has every right to be upset and it’s a wild take that this makes HIM the shitty friend. James isn’t an idiot. He picked up quick that Augustus was there to fuck with Mike and he figured out Paulo/Daisy having a thing faster than Mike did. He has absolutely realizes the subtext of Mike chasing him and David outside, being jealous of James sharing something first with David, etc. Now factor in that James is just one of several people treated like this (he is in no way special to Mike! At all!! Except as an ego boost!!!), saw the violent reaction, and saw just how venomous Mike can truly be, it’d be bizarre for him NOT to be salty.

AlisterTX

Comment ID #40820

I 110% agree. If ANY of us was in James position (and Mike was a new friend we got) we would have been glad to find out all that early , before we got hurt. As James said: dodged a bullet.

Mr. Beard

Comment ID #40823

EXACTLYYY!!! As much as we as the audience can feel for Mike and understand that there’s a Lot going on, James absolutely has every right to be upset and not want to associate with him, end of story. He’s a victim of Mike stringing him along and using him, how is he the bad guy for not wanting to deal with that anymore??

Arthur

Comment ID #40824

When you think about it, David pulled the same move Mike did in December: he unilaterally decided the speech’s subject would be isolated, assuming everyone would go along. That wrecked Lucy’s mental health, and it’s setting Mike up for the same. The difference is that Mike was deliberately cruel; David is, at best, oblivious and, at worst, callous.

PAM

I’m a little confused as to why some folks are seeing this and immediately jumping to “I guess Paulo is gonna stop being friends with James now” ?? His concern for Mike is very understandable and sweet; that’s one of his best friends! But I really don’t get how this suddenly means he has to “choose” one over the other? Is this really all that different from how his relationships have been with Mike and Lucy for some time now? Even if those two weren’t talking anymore, he was still friends with both of them (Or at least trying to be).

I think it’s important to consider that from his perspective, James and Mike have been consistently hanging out for weeks now with seemingly no issues whatsoever, and all of a sudden, James is coming in to sit at their table, clearly upset at the mere /thought/ about Mike. Would that not ring any alarm bells? Especially when joined by Lucy; if I were in Paulo’s shoes, I would also be concerned about what just happened, but for ALL of my friends involved. It doesn’t have to be a situation in which expressing concern for one party means completely hating the other.

Especially since James has reason to be upset with Mike! Is he being harsh about it? Sure! But I feel like we’re forgetting that everything that went down on the track was probably less than 10 minutes ago in-universe; It is still fresh. But also they just got to the table, they haven’t even had the chance to Think about talking stuff out yet. I feel like some people are jumping the gun a bit because of feeling bad for Mike, and that’s leading to this idea of James needing to face some kind of “punishment” for being mad at him… It just puts a bad taste in my mouth, I dunno. Excellent page, though!

I’m going to consider some arguments:

-James tried to date Mike, and was rejected. He saw Mike was having relationship issues and tried to give him something he considered better. Is that bad? Yes, sorta, but also he’s a teenager, I don’t think it was malicious. After Mike rejected him he stopped perusing him.

-I don’t think he moved on to David “too fast”. You’re allowed to have more than one crush, especially at his age. I think it’s perfectly acceptable to go “Oh, this person has set a boundary, but I very much like this person too!”. They didn’t break up, Mike flat out rejected any notion of romance, so he moved on.

-James has known Mike for a short period of time. He doesn’t know him as deeply as the others, and doesn’t know his history. All he knows is what he was just told, and his emotions for him. Mike suddenly is very clingy to him, even after rejecting him, then its explained and CONFIMED that he abused his friend, punched out someone else in front of him, and was told that he was using James as an anchor. He has every right to be angry and “not know” what’s going to happen. He’s hurt, angry, and upset right now.

-Paulo doesn’t know what happened outside. He just saw James and David, who were with him, come sit down. Mike is still his friend, he has no idea he just punched Augustus and admitted to his cruelty. He can be confused and still not blame either one of them for how they acted.

-Mike needs professional help, just like Lucy got. Lucy wasn’t perfect, but the difference between them right now is she got help and she is deeply practicing that help every time I see her. She is calmer, and her reaction to strike Mike was not one out of malice, but one to defend both herself and her friend. The look on the page after she hit him tells me she did not do it without thought, and how much she’s been trying to avoid him and ignore him when she cannot avoid him tells me she is no longer his antagonist, and the blame in THIS moment rests upon him.

She had her punishment, she hurt him, he left her, and she got help in the end. There is zero need to further disrespect Lucy or antagonize her by hanging around spaces she tries to create for herself. Even if it isn’t on purpose, he KNOWS he’s doing it.

TLDR: Mike sucks, James only half sucks, Lucy does not suck at all (anymore).

Cassiopeia

Comment ID #40836

I agree with all of this!

Kuru

Comment ID #40837

Another thought: I wonder if Mike is really confusing romantic / platonic relationships overall. He keeps insisting he loves his friends and it’s hurtful that loving them platonically “isn’t enough” because they wind up “leaving him.”

He gets jealous when his friends pay more attention to their crushes/partners than to him. He thinks Paulo and Daisy have “moved on” from him because they got together. It’s like he expects his friends to give him the same level of attention you’d get from a romantic partner, so he thinks they’re “leaving him” if he doesn’t get it. He just doesn’t want to kiss them, and “one-sided unrequited crush attention we call friendship” is what he got from Lucy for years, so he doesn’t see the contradiction.

It’s also why he brushes off the track team. They’re not doting on him like James did, so they’re not “friends,” they’re acquaintances. Friends are deep emotional connections and nothing less will suffice.

Really unhealthy thoughts in that little gray head of his.
