LUCY INSTANTLY REGREts IT OH MY GOD

Elisa

Comment ID #35789

Well I would hope so. It would undermine her growth if she just resorted to that with little empathy like before.

Honestly I’m glad. It’s a pretty serious backslide. I think the only person she’d gotten physical with since returning is Paulo, and that’s only after he jumped and blatantly groped her. So if she hadn’t shown immediate remorse here, I’d be more worried about how it would impact her progress. But she seems to be taking the chance to de-escalate and make her position clear more calmly now that the shouting has stopped.

Alec

Comment ID #35791

Well technically Paulo was the last person she got physical with after their conversation in I believe Double Down when Paulo said he didn’t have feelings for her anymore

Rocky Wolfknight

Yeah I’m actually so sad to see her reaction, she absolutely hates it I feel so bad

Her expression is SO good. It conveys so much inner conflict, history and sadness. It hurts, man

whiteboypizza

She definitely didn’t want to go there but considering how her closest friend was JUST assaulted and then she’s accused of shit that’s highly inflammatory right after? Most people wouldn’t have stood a chance at not throwing hands (or feet in this case)

This. This is progress.

It’s clear that, despite everything, the trials and tribulations, Lucy WANTS TO CHANGE. And in this instant, she catches herself (albeit a bit late) from falling into her usual violent ways.

However, I am curious as to where she is getting at with this question.

If I had to guess, to maybe get Mike reveal how long he wanted sandy And when he didn’t get what he wanted, went after her

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #35803

My thoughts are maybe to (attempt to) approach Mike’s infatuation with Sandy over the years and how he would project that onto Lucy even as kids, and how that affected her friendship with him… In the past he’s bristled at the mere mention of Sandy, but I’m wondering now if he’ll actually sit at talk since his relationship with her doesn’t seem to satisfy him anymore :0

Lucy…. :(

Mike was being a dickhead, but I am so glad that Lucy actually shows remorse in kicking him in the gut like that. I cant wait to see where this conversation ends up!! theyre actually speaking to each other!!

esinololly

Wait did she kicked him in the gut? I thought she kicked him in the groin.

…either way, that looked like it hurt like a bitch

Yellow467

looked a little high to be a groin kick tbh, so it probably was the gut

I knew Lucy would hate that she felt the need to resort to violence, and it makes sense that she would react violently to Mike saying that “she” had been leading “him” on.

That may have been how it started in grade school, after Mike tried to kiss Lucy in her room, but once Mike had Sandy, Lucy’s feelings (or lack thereof) shouldn’t have bothered him anymore.

And it’s especially galling for him to bring this up after what he pulled on the hill after the temporary break-up. If anything can be considered ‘leading someone on’, it would be confessing your feelings and kissing someone the night before and then acting like it meant nothing the day after.

Elizabeth Hunter

Comment ID #35810

To be fair, I can see where Mike is coming from with those comments. After Sandy moved, all he really had was the occasional letter from her, and he wasn’t really clear where their relationship stood. Meanwhile, Lucy’s constantly just going along with Yashy’s belief that she and Mike are a couple without making her own feeling clear, to the point where she would use Yashy as an excuse to avoid Mike clarifying his relationship with Sandy after entering high school, assumedly because she still had feelings for him and didn’t want the constant reminders that he chose someone else. (Which, mind you, he only did because she wasn’t reciprocal of his affections toward her after Sandy moved, though I can understand her not wanting to feel like a rebound or being worried about their relationship lasting were Sandy to return at any point)

But yes, with Mike, it’s very much pot and kettle, and Mike needs the reality check that regardless of Lucy’s feelings towards him at the time, Mike made his decision and, to cut Lucy out completely, went fully scorched earth with their friendship.

Semi related I kinda hope she brings up what she said before Mike blew up at her in December, based on the advice Augustus had given her at the library earlier that day: That she was happy for him and was glad to see him happy with someone else (Even if she wishes it was her, instead) Even if it hurt her, she was willing to stand by and watch him be happy with Sandy. I think given time, and Mike having not gone off on her like that while establishing proper boundaries, they could have had a healthier friendship by this point. But also they’re teens and teens aren’t known for their Controlled emotions. Wonderful page though!! Excited to see where this goes

Ooooooo, the look on Lucy she really looks like she doesn’t want to resort to being violent and to actually have a conversation that both of them need to have. I just hope Mike now reads the room and doesn’t go backwards and actually for both to come to a mutual understanding and maybe later on the road come to a full thorough discussion about the issue at hand.

Even though Lucy resorted to violence, I think Mike deserved it. He has no place accusing Lucy of leading him on when she used to always avoid her feelings for him due to her Tsundere personality back then. She always turned him down even though they both knew she just wasn’t ready to accept her feelings. Im just sad that her hitting him made her feel bad. Mike needs to learn to stop lashing out and let things go. He just bottles everything up and dwells on it. He’s so inside his own head he cant even see what’s happening around him. Im also surprised Lucy is even speaking to him about the past right now. She knows the truth, she got her kick in, but now shes taking the time to speak her piece. I hope she tells him that shes fully done with even acknowledging him and tells him to just move on. I hope this is the line in the sand; We no longer know eachother, consider us strangers and dont seek me out. And to Augustus, I hope she tells him to leave Mike alone and let the past be the past. They all need to move on.

Mearcyn

Comment ID #35825

I think it’s because she doesn’t want to be that person anymore. She is trying to change for the better because she knows how damaging her actions of the past were. I definitely think that in both situations with mike and auggie and now with lucy absolutely could have been solved without violence. However im sure this is all happening for a reason.

Brittany

Comment ID #35826

I believe you are absolutely correct, she doesnt want to act out or be violent like she used to be. But in my own opinion, I feel Mike deserved that kick. He accused her of leading him on and tried to push the blame for his actions onto her. They were best friends, kids playing after school, and yes, Lucy was physically violent with him, yes she would call him a jerk face, yes, she was bad at saying how she felt, but I never really thought she treated him like shit. In all the flashbacks that Mike had, she was always there for him, she could be serious and give him advice, she wasn’t always kicking him in the knee or giving him a bloody nose. They were, and still are, kids. I never liked the way Mike just demonized Lucy after Sandy said something. Even Sandy told Mike that as long as Lucy stopped hitting him thats all that bothered her. My point is… Mike trying to drag Lucy down as if what she did compares to someone telling you you are a parasitic, unlovable monster that no one will stick beside or care about, and also wishing she would die to himself and to Sandy… Its just annoying that he’s trying to shift blame. Yeah Lucy isnt totally innocent but her actions were more innocent and mindless than his were. I like that Lucy has grown so much, but its sad how hurting him still hurts her. She regrets that kick and I wish she didn’t because even though violence isnt the answer, shes the only one who can even stand up to Mike. She’s probably the only one who CAN kick Mike. And he deserved it, in my opinion.

Notice how they both had a reason for exploding. Yet only Lucy is ever given the benefit of the doubt for exploding. This time it’s just because she, “felt bad” after the fact. I love Lucy as much as the next person. Yet the double standard is real. Especially, since people blamed Sandy for the end of Mike & Lucy’s friendship because she pointed out Lucy was always hitting him. Though, never once blamed Lucy for being violent in the first place. Yet the first time Mike ever hit anyone he was demonized for it. When Lucy got away with it for years, because her actions were deemed as funny.

Are we just forgetting him slamming Paulo’s face into a table?

baffledBITS

Comment ID #35833

Why would we forget about Mike slamming Paulo’s face against the table? No one has forgotten that. Just like no one should forget that Lucy used to turn Mike every which way but loose and it was never seen as a problem until it was too late.

Elmanii

Comment ID #35834

Augh, you can tell Lucy instantly feels Awful about having regressed in this moment with her anger issues and I love her but it’s right that she does and I hope she remembers how bad this feels next time and is able to remind herself it’s just never going to be worth it. I personally don’t think Augustus expected things to pop off quite this violently and explosively but I certainly also don’t think he’s sorry to see it. I think he’s got so many issues of his own to work through and thinks this is just what it takes to ‘protect’ someone by ‘showing’ them who someone else is mask off and hoping that can save them from caring about them or not wanting to hurt them and that this will help. I honestly think he just doesn’t get that this isn’t the way for Lucy to find her peace and that what Lucy was trying to do in moving on and accepting having to see each other but not interact for now while they’re both still working on themselves was what she chose for herself for a reason.

Fiver

Comment ID #35843

Okay, time to call a shot. Not that I think this is going to be a difficult shot, as I feel like the conversation is bringing up a topic already addressed in BCI, but I want to type all this out nonetheless.

We already know the answer to Lucy’s question. The letters started as soon as Sandy left, after 3rd grade, and while they slowed down over time, they never stopped until the start of freshman year, once Mike was able to contact Sandy via phone and they switched to that instead. And therein lies why both Mike and Lucy have been unable to accept each other’s feelings as genuine.

This did not start with Mike rebounding on Lucy and breaking her heart the next day.

This did not start with Mike misinterpreting Sandy wanting Lucy to be less violent as permission to destroy her social life.

This did not start with Lucy turning to abuse to mask her feelings.

This did not start with Lucy being too afraid to take the next step with her best friend.

This started when a little girl with socialisation problems had her first and only friend abandon her for a year.

And sure, he apologised. And sure, she forgave him. But Mike now has first hand experience that claiming forgiveness is not the same as actual forgiveness. From that point on, there has been a level of distrust that neither of them has attempted to address, so it kept growing.

Mike was never able to convince Lucy that she wasn’t just a backup plan if Sandy fell through, and her distrust of him grew, and she became more abusive. Lucy was never able to convince Mike that she wanted him as more than a sparring partner, and his distrust of her grew, and his desire to destroy her grew. And neither of them ever stopped to talk about it, instead letting their own behaviour grow more and more toxic until it nearly splattered all over a highway exit.

And the sad thing? I think Mike’s confession back in 7th grade was 100% genuine and not an attempt to string Lucy along as a backup whenever things with Sandy went wrong. Mike is, bluntly, oblivious to love. He was the second last person in the school to figure out Paulo and Daisy’s crushes on each other. He thought his dates with Daisy and James were both platonic until both of them were trying to get into his mouth. And he failed to pick up on the fact that, even as he thought they were drifting apart, Sandy still considered him her boyfriend. He thought she was lost years beforehand, and that was fate, so Lucy was, as far as he knew, the most important person in his life. Unfortunately for him Lucy’s more aware of these things, and was able to catch on that Sandy was still a thing.

They need a long, frank, and probably brutal talk with each other. About who they are, what they mean to each other, why they have both been perpetuating a cycle of hurting for half of their lives. And that’s probably not happening today, they’ve both already screwed up too much.

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #35844

If I can be honest

August really mess that chance up for both of them, and like you said, that talk is not going to happen here, or likely anytime soon, or for all we know, probably far into the future when they meet again one day as adults.

In my opinion, that chance was thrown out the window as soon as August started shit up for the sake of “protecting” Lucy.

And whatever is going to happen next, will push them away even more and will make the reconciliation one day even more harder. For all we know, it’s likely going to be unachievable at this point thanks to this shit show that was unfolded due to August, and Mike and Lucys‘, actions today too

Rocky Wolfknight

Comment ID #35845

oh my god Lucy thought Mike’s scarf was meant to match Sandy’s ribbon despite him buying it immediately after confessing because she couldn’t believe he was being genuine

aaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #35846

@SomeColourMage EXACTLYYY!!!! One of the very first things I think of when it comes to the messiness of their relationship, is the time after Sandy left, and we see Mike calling Lucy “Sandy” multiple times… Yeah, some of them come from him waking up from a nap or daydream, but considering how much it would happen to her, I can’t imagine how it must have felt :[ Especially since this was before any romantic feelings between them, she just wanted to hang out with her best and only friend, but he could only ever think of someone else for the longest time…

Arthur

Comment ID #35847

I hope she goes off on Augustus too for everything since he’s the one being a little bitch here. Lucy ignored Mike being around and told him she didn’t care, whereas the massive ego and tiny dick on Augustus made him keep pushing and he needs to be put in his fucking place since this isn’t his fight technically.

I like how she sees the pain in Mike’s face after the kick and shows regret. Given how her abuse of him was mainly physical.

It would have been easy (even understandable) if she was too mad to care at that moment, after everything she’s been through and after the display Mike has just made.

I don’t think either of them likes hurting the other, just a lot of unresolved issues piling up on both sides until they spill out in an ugly way.
