Lickit&stickit,

I have not denied the idea of depression. Nor do i have a problem with people with the issue. HOWEVER, the fact is, as many have stated, that it’s still in study yet people are still being diagnosed with it. That’s my problem, what defines a case of Clinical Depression? Because from what i’ve seen every member of the military who deploys should get diagnosed with it because it seems to me that psychiatrists will diagnose ANYONE who’s a little sad with CD even though sadness is a natural release mechanism just like anger and laughter.

@buchanen_neket
While the system is by no means perfect, what you said right there is completely wrong. As a graduate of Psychology, I was required to memorize many criteria out of the DSM-IV and the newly released DSM-V as to what qualifies as “depression.” There is no one definition for “depression” because there are many types of depression.

The problem with the general public, especially with cases of soldiers returning from war, is that they lump depression, Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental states together like they are all the same thing. The problem is that they aren’t and people like you trying to explain them with your limited knowledge and “what makes sense to you” doesn’t help anyone and only helps increase the stigma and strengthens stereotypes.

They truth is they do not just give medicine to anyone just because they’re “sad”. It is true that some doctors are negligent and don’t give their patients the right amount of attention and often give them the WRONG thing, which only helps increase their problems. But the fact of the matter is that when diagnosing mental health disorders, there IS a clear cut rulebook/guidelines that health professionals use. Is it written in stone? No. It’s dynamic and ever changing because we keep finding out new things to better help us treat patients.

Sue is all like “mmmm I SENSE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE”. Also I took the character quiz and apparently I am Sue. For those wondering about the relationship between Lucy and Sue, apparently they were very close friends originally but Lucy grew apart from Sue. Sue tries to be a friend when she can, and Lucy still trusts her.

@Ven
thank you for mentioning the DSM-V, I was about to pounce…

I’ve heard it said by some of my college instructors that adolescents are, anecdotally, hormonally insane, and any kind of diagnosis an adult (over 21) would have has to be given one more layer of consideration from the fact that their brains are not completely developed yet, that several major parts of their brain still have growing to do, especially the impulse-control centers towards the front (i.e. blurting out that you hate someone you’ve spent nearly your whole life protecting from harm). This is all in relation to human adolescents and I don’t know how it relates to anthropomorphic dog/cat adolescents, but I’m assuming it holds mostly true.

That being said, and I’ve stated before I relate to Mike, I hope for everyone’s sakes that Sue rakes him across the coals, just a little. A little tough treatment from someone else might ease some of the self-flagellation he’s doing in his mind.

EDIT: did my quiz too, not a real surprise:

@buchanen_neket

It seems to you. Naturally. Because your experience with people trying to say you have PSTD is conclusive of how they diagnose depression…

People don’t even go to therapy or a psychiatrist unless they recognize a major problem. Chances are if they are there (whether someone convinced them or they had the courage to go themselves) they are having some major issues.

As I mentioned earlier, this isn’t something most people with the problem even like to admit they have due to the negative association.

“Surely you aren’t always sad right?”
“But you aren’t one of THOSE people.”
“You aren’t… feeling DEPRESSED right?”

So the general procedure if someone comes to a psychiatrist after facing all those opinions, is that the psychiatrist is going to assume that they aren’t just sad. The only way to tell is to listen to the patient talk. You can’t just pull some blood to figure it out. They have to check for the behavioral patterns. You do realize that is why they study human behavior right?

Furthermore, medical doctors do the same thing. They make a diagnostic, and test for it until they are sure of the condition. Then they try treatment options.

How do you suggest they better diagnose? Should they just not treat people since they haven’t set a tangible way to diagnose? Do you expect them to neglect trying to help people while they wait for the studies while they know people are suffering from it right now?

Comment ID #265518

@Ven and Anon,

Seriously, i’ve seen guys who were perfectly fine, healthy well adjusted individuals go to one psychiatrist because they had a few off days and get pills dumped on them. Like i said that’s the problem i have with the psychiatric diagnosis of depression because there’s a difference between what is taught and what is happening in the world. Depression is one of the easiest for a psychiatrist to claim apparently. Hell the psychiatrist that worked for substance abuse program i went to when i got my captain’s mast for underage drinking tried to diagnose me with it. Thing is I was bullshitting her like mad, I was actually pushing for anger issues but she thought i was depressed and that’s why i drank.

@Lickit&stickit,

Personally i’d rather it be a possible diagnosis when it has been thoroughly defined as what is a person being overly depressed and when they are just going through a stage. I mean depression is a part of the 5 stages of grief and most people do get through it without professional help. So what’s the difference between the 5 stages version and the clinical depression version (the version you get meds for). When that can be defined then i will have no problem with clinical depression being defined as an illness instead of just a symptom.

On that note, when did he put his drink down before his breakdown? Did he just pick up someone else’s drink?

Now a spill is one think but where is the control, his reflexes to save drinks need to be honed. Unless he has been distracted by something, like the scarf and who it reminds him of.

Hahaha, okay here’s mine.

I don’t think Lucy is perfect. She can be a little tirade.
Lucy dug herself a hole by always being so socially confused about hitting.
I do think Lucy has been emotionally battered by mostly Mike.
I was actually always neutral towards Mike until his tantrum.
I dislike that Mike tore down someone long after they stopped talking.
I do think his argument majorly added to Lucy’s depression spiral to suicide.
I don’t have much thought towards Sandy. She is never in comic much.

Mike’s influence made Lucy the insecure tearful mess she has been.
Lucy’s influence roughed up Mike occasionally.
Sandy’s catalyzed the beginning of Mike’s gradual rejection of friendship.

It’s a sad state of affairs, but we see similar problems in all fields of human service. Case managers are too over-taxed to take the time needed for their clients, teachers and counselors don’t have the proper training to recognize problems before they get out of hand, it’s a huge problem and you have my sincerest empathy for what you have gone through. I know things like BCB help me to take a mirror to some of my issues by how I can relate to the well-written characters as they deal with things, sometimes better and sometimes worse, than I would have in their shoes. I hope for your sake that you are able to get whatever kind of assistance you need and in the meanwhile can lose yourself for a few moments in the drama of cartoon teenage cats.

@buchanen_neket

It is the five stages of GRIEF. Which means that there was an actual death or major loss that is starting the process.

There is a lot of confusion on the term “depression” where people think that sadness is depression. The five stages of grief means to say sadness and not depression. The person is feeling sad because they lost someone, not because they always feel that way. A psychiatrist would not give medication to such a person.

Depression is constant feelings of hopelessness, changes in in things that once gave joy, lack of interest in living, lethargy, and physical symptoms like racing heart beat, shaking hands or constant sleeping. In-explainable crying, changes in personality and “putting on a mask” so others don’t see. Guilt, shame and worthlessness are accompanied.

What you said: “When that can be defined then i will have no problem with clinical depression being defined as an illness instead of just a symptom.” speaks volumes about your misunderstanding.

You don’t actually see it as an illness. You see it as part of a grieving process that everyone is apparently misdiagnosed.

Which, it is considered a chronic illness, by the way. :/ (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/depression/ DS00175)

To your credit, I sure the forces you served for may have had this issue of over-diagnosing because it is very common among soldiers. That doesn’t mean that ALL therapists do this to everyone who comes in. Your experience ONLY deals with people who are at high risk for PTSD.

Comment ID #265539

@Lickit&Stickit,

Yes and no, I don’t see EVERY case as a case for a mental illness. I know there are some that could be classed as an mental illness, but not everyone of them is and this is due to depression being too vaguely defined to the point a person could get a prescription while not having any mental issues. Further what is it really, is it a symptom as some seem to suggest or is it an illness. I mean think about it is a person with a runny nose really sick or is it just the cold weather. Is a person coughing coming down with a cold or do they just have something stuck in their throat. Maybe, maybe not, it could be a symptom of sickness or it could be a person is reacting to an external factor. But to be clear, If it’s a symptom then it can’t be an illness as it’s a side effect of a worse condition or it could just be as I tried to point be a person having a reaction for the purpose of stress relief.

Also yes, that article did cover just one doctor as an example, but that doctor isn’t the only one and it has become more and more common to see doctors just like that doctor

That he, as a 8 year old, got emotional scars from that girl who followed him around, beating him up, and bullied him. Then refused his love… Years before she grew up to confess to him. As far as where this depression discussion is going, I would like to direct your attention to this.
This is the most accurate thing I have ever seen about what depression is, and what it’s like. None of us can say for sure what Lucy is going through, but I think the feeling of emptiness is implied in those dead eyes.

@Blue fox: I SHOULD

Hey man your right about the military thing. Some of the guys I served with in Kabul were doing pretty badly i thought they had depression (I’m a medic) but the jackets told them it was PTSD

What realy gets me is mike in the begining was th douchie nice guy, and u could understand where he was comming from when he pushed lucy away, but what he did was a huge dick move, if not scar ing to lucy. But what i have a hard time getting past is he still trys to hold himself up high when he’s a huge douche. He hasn’t paid for his sins on the matter and i want sue to dig it out of him. I’m hoping the truth comes out soon

So what if people are being wrongly diagnosed? Better safe than sorry, MDD is serious business and can wreck a person in ways unimaginable.
And soldiers who have been on the front lines (as well as firefighters, policemen, other people who puts their life on the line as a job) more often get PTSD, which is oft accompanied by MDD but the cause is different- traumatic events and near-death experiences would cause PTSD while MDD is more based on chemistry and biology, and our best guess as of now is that depression is mainly caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and/or abnormal brain structure.

@The norse operator

I think they just umbrella PTSD because they know the main issue if the symptoms weren’t present before and are present now because of all the stuff they had to do on the front lines.

Specifically, if they start there with “Well you do seem to have a confusing amount of backlash from the trauma.” Then maybe they can figure it out for each person whether it is anger, depression, or anything else.

@GingerPaws

That was a beautiful explanation of what depression is and feels like. I often felt that helpless with my best friend whenever he was acting the same way.

… I can’t help think that’s a REALLY stupid place for Mike to put his beer. XD Behind the couch? Really?

Does Rachel not have any tables?

On that note, either the couch is really short or his arm is really long.

@Mickey the Luxray,

“So what if people are being wrongly diagnosed?” I seriously did not hear you say that. I did not. So you wouldn’t mind if you go into the hospital because you cut your thumb and the doc decides they need to amputate your arm then would ya? Are you serious?! Misdiagnosing and mistreating a condition is grounds for malpractice. If the person doesn’t have depression and they are given Prozac it can either worsen the condition they do have or could cause new problems to crop up.

@Chocothunda,

I think he missed the first time and the next panel is he’s in a stupor, kind of like he’s frozen up. I don’t know why, but it could be he’s having an “oh ****” moment. I mean think about it, and this is something barely mentioned by the commenters here, he’s gotta go home some time. How’s he gonna explain spilled alcohol on his jacket and smelling like a brewery to his mom?
